Millikin Men’s Basketball Turns Record Setting Day in Win over Greenville

The Millikin men's basketball team had a record setting day in its 144-127 win over Greenville University on New Year's Day at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.

 

Millikin started off 2022 setting new record records for points in game at 144 breaking the old record of 133 set in 1967. The Big Blue also set records for field goals made in game and team field goal percentage. Millikin was 63-84 from the field making 75 percent of its shots. The accurate shooting broke the old record of 71.4 percent set in 1989. The 63 fields goals were the most in a game by a Big Blue team since 1973 (old record 57).

 

The Big Blue scored 122 points in the paint led by a career day from junior Michael Akinwumi with 43 points and 11 rebounds. He was 19-22 from the field with the most of his shots coming as dunks on the fast break. Millikin had 10 players score in the game with seven players scoring in double figures. Freshman Noah Livingston had a career high 19 points and six assists. Sophomore DeMarcus Bond had 16 points along with 10 assists with career highs in both. Calvin Fisher had 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Drake Stevenson had 14 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Freshman Landon Hullinger had a career high 10 points and Cole Laurence also scored 10 points for the Big Blue.

 

Millikin didn't back down from the run and shoot offense of Greenville relaying on rebounding and fast break baskets to pull off the victory. Millikin won the rebounding battle 50 to 29. Millikin pulled down 28 defensive rebounds. Greenville shot 46 percent from the field going 45-97 and made 38.5 percent from three-point range. Both teams made 17 free throws.

 

Greenville had 10 players score with eight players reaching double figures. The Panthers top scorer was Cam Irvin with 20 points followed by Kaidyn Johnson with 19.

 

Millikin is now 7-6 while Greenville goes to 1-10. The Big Blue return to action on January 8 when they resume College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action with a trip to North Park.
