Calvin makes run at Stout in second half to give Blue Devils loss

OSHKOSH (December 30, 2021) - Calvin College made a run at UW-Stout late in the first half and kept running through the second half to hand the Blue Devils only their second loss in the month of December with a 97-88 decision on the second day of the BSN Winter Classic at Oshkosh Arena. 

Stout (10-3) led 56-41 with 1:40 left in the first half when Calvin (7-4) scored 12 straight points into the second half and held Stout scoreless to pull to within 56-53 one minute into the second half. Stout held onto the lead until the midway point of the second half when the Knights grabbed a 72-71 lead. 

The Blue Devils twice captured the lead, but the Knights managed to tie the score both times, then took the lead for good at 78-77 with 4:59 remaining. Calvin outscored Stout 19-11 the rest of the way to snare the 11-point win, snapping Stout's winning streak at five games. 

Stout shot well from the field for the game. After shooting 57.9 percent (22-38) in the first half, the Blue Devils dipped to 42.4 percent (14-33) to finish the game shooting 50.7 percent (36-71). It was 3-point shooting in the second half that dipped. Stout shot 8 of 27 for the game from beyond the arc, but connected only 1 of 12 in the second half. The Blue Devils were perfect from the free throw line, hitting all eight opportunities. Calvin shot 85.7 percent from the line for the day, hitting 24 of 28 charity shots, 19 of 20 in the second half.

Lovell Williams, Armani Tinsley and Jon Ciriacks combined for 62 of Stout's 88 points. Williams scored 24 points and added 11 assists for his second double-double of the season. Tinsley tossed in 20 points and Ciriacks 18 points. Stout tallied 10 blocked shots with Nick Jungel collecting three.

Calvin had five players score in double digits, led by Marcus Bult's 25 points. Uchenna Egekeze added 22, Luke Morrison 16, Thad Shymanski 16 and Jordan Katje recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Knights outrebounded Stout, 35-31. 

The game was the final non-conference game for both teams. Stout returns to conference play when they host UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Jan. 5. Stout will be at UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 8.
