PITTSFORD, N.Y. - Senior Mason Memmelaar scored 24 points and three others reached double digits, including 10 from Will Fredericks off the bench, as the No. 21 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team defeated Medaille College 81-67 in the consolation game of the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament hosted by St. John Fisher College. The Engineers improve to 9-1, while the Mavericks drop to 4-7.

A day after recording a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds, Memmelaar made 8 of 12 shots from the floor and 8 of 13 from the free throw line. Junior Jonny Angbazo scored 19 points and Will Rubin, also a junior, had 15, including a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line. Fredericks made three field goals with two coming from behind the arc, and a pair from the free throw line. Sophomore Avery Eugster had a team-best 11 rebounds, along with eight points.

Medaille was paced by Kendall McGill's 22 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Rodney Graves chipped in with 12 points and eight caroms.

The score was tied 30-30 at halftime and remained tight through the first eight minutes of the second half when a Mavericks free throw made it 43-42. A dunk by Angbazo, a three-pointer from Fredericks, a triple from Alex Parisotto and a jumper from Memmelaar gave the Engineers a 52-42 lead midway through the second half.

The margin grew to 12 points, 56-44, on a pair of free throws from Memmelaar a minute later and RPI led by at least seven points for the rest of the contest.

Rensselaer is back in action on Friday when it plays at Liberty League foe Ithaca College at 7:30pm. Medaille plays at SUNY Brockport on Monday at 3pm.
