Blue Devil defense shuts down Ripon in second half, Stout goes on to 76-49 win

OSHKOSH (December 29, 2021) - UW-Stout put the clamps on Ripon College in the second half and went on to down the Red Hawks, 76-49, Wednesday at the BSN Winter Classic hosted by UW-Oshkosh at the Oshkosh Arena.

Stout (10-2) put the proverbial lid on the Ripon basket in the second half, allowing the Red Hawks (7-4) only five second half field goals, of which two were 3-pointers. After shooting 52.0 percent (13-25) in the second half, Stout allowed Ripon to shoot a paltry 18.5 percent (5-27) after halftime. The 49 points by Ripon were the fewest points allowed by Stout this season and the fewest a Stout team has allowed since Jan. 29, 2014, when Stout defeated UW-River Falls, 67-48.

Trailing 19-17 midway through the first half, Stout went on a 10-0 run to take a 27-19 lead and never trailed again. Armani Tinsley set off the run on a 3-pointer at 8:34, followed by a 3-pointer (at 8:13) and a bucket (at 7:06) by Lovell Williams and  a basket by Luke Geiger (at 6:03) for the eight point lead. Ripon cut the lead to 27-21, but Geiger stretched it back to a nine point game with a 3-pointer. Ripon  got as close as six points, 32-26, at 3:33, but when Williams hit a 3-pointer at 1:20 for an 11-point, 39-28, Stout held a double-digit lead the rest of the game.

Williams led all scorers with 22 points, the 11th time this season he scored in double digits, his second consecutive 20-point effort and the fifth time this year he has scored more than 20 points. Williams also dished off a game-high five assists, the ninth time this year he has recorded five or more assists, and four steals. 

Geiger finished with 13 points, hitting three 3-pointers and Tinsley finished with 10 points, connecting on two 3-pointers.

Ripon was held to 34.6 percent shooting (18-52) from the floor for the game, 22.2 percent (4-18) from 3-point range and 9 of 16 from the free throw line. Stout was steady throughout the night and finished shooting 44.4 percent (32-72) from field goal range, 35.5 percent (11-31) from beyond the arc and 1 of 4 from the line.

The Red Hawks got 11 points apiece from David De Valk and Ryan Steffes. Ripon was charged with 23 turnovers, while Stout finished with 13. The Blue Devils got 19 points off turnovers. and also dominated in the paint, outscoring Ripon 36-16 underneath. 

Stout will wrap up play in the BSN Winter Classic when they face Calvin College, Thursday, Dec. 30 at 2:30 p.m.
