Salisbury, Md. -- Tharon Suggs lifted University of Lynchburg over Salisbury, 77-75, with an elbow jumper Saturday afternoon.

Suggs scored 13 points with four rebounds in the contest helping the Hornets win their fifth-straight.

Play opened with a torrent pace. After Cam Savage knocked down three free throws, T.C. Thacker made a layup to give the Hornets a 5-4 lead just over a minute into the game. Thacker also sank a 3-pointer 3:52 later, marking the sixth lead change in only 5:26 of play.

Both teams wrestled with the lead throughout the first half and neither squad built larger than a four-point lead in the opening period.

Miles Taylor and Jordan Parham helped close one of those four-point deficits midway through the first. After Taylor knocked down a mid-range jumper, Parham nabbed a steal and converted the two-hand slam dunk on the other end to knot things up at 24-24.

Thacker made a layup 28 second before halftime to give Lynchburg its largest lead of the first at 43-39. However, the Sea Gulls scored at the buzzer, sending things to halftime with Lynchburg up by two. Thacker boasted a game-high 11 points at the break with four rebounds.

Thacker got up to 16 points quickly in the second half, scoring Lynchburg's first three points of the half on a layup and a free throw.

Carrington Young sank a jumper shortly after, giving Lynchburg its biggest lead of the night, 52-46.

The Hornets held onto that advantage until the 13:52 mark when Jordan Oates sank a 3-pointer, retaking the lead for the Sea Gulls. Oates led Salisbury with 16 points and was one of four Sea Gulls in double-figures.

The final 13 minutes of play featured four ties and five lead changes as the Hornets battled for their second win over Salisbury in program history.

Lynchburg faced its biggest deficit with 4:53 to play, down by six. The Hornets responded with their longest run of the afternoon to retake the lead. Taylor made a layup on an assist from Thacker then Parham sank two deep balls to put the Hornets up 73-71. The sophomore finished the game with 14 points.

Suggs served as the hero to put the game away. He made a pair of free throws with 44 seconds left, but the Sea Gulls tied it back up at 75 on the next possession. After head coach Hilliary Scott called a timeout, Suggs buried a clutch, elbow jumper to seal the deal with 1.9 seconds left on the clock.

The Sea Gulls got the ball in the hands of their leading scorer as time expired, but Oates missed the would-be game winner and the Hornets grabbed their sixth win of the season.

While Suggs was the hero down the stretch, Thacker led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds; his fourth-straight double-double and 11th game scoring in double figures.

The Hornets (6-1, 2-0 ODAC) head south and travel through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on their way to a rematch with Christopher Newport on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 4 p.m. Lynchburg sank the Captains 83-66 earlier in the season.
