FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Mason Wang had eight steals, one off both the Blazers' school record and from the most in Division III this season, in a 100-79 win over visiting Widener in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Wang scored a team-high 21 points and dished out seven assists. 
  • Ryan Hollwedel went 5-for-6 from the 3-point line and ended his day with a career-high 17 points. 
  • Evan Wang shot 6-of-10 from the field, including 2-for-5 from 3-point range, to finish with 15 points. 
  • Christopher Smalls notched 13 points and was a perfect 7-for-7 on free throws. 
  • Bryce Butler grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a team-high seven assists. 

How it Happened

  • Hood led by five, 69-64, before Smalls made a layup with 9:22 to play that started a 31-15 run to end the game. The Blazers hit over 70 percent from the field down the stretch knocked down 3-for-4 from behind the 3-point arc and went 8-for-10 at the free throw line.
  • What was once a five-point lead swelled to as many as 23 after the Blazers' final field goal, a 3-pointer by Will Spencer with 45 seconds left. Seven different players scored during the run, including seven points apiece by Smalls and Evan Wang
  • Hood held the lead throughout the second half but grew the lead to double figures for the first time with an 8-2 spurt to go up 61-51 on a bucket by Trumaine Strickland at 15:09.   
  • In the first half, Widener took an early 10-8 lead on a 3-pointer by Pat Holden with 15:27 left. Hollwedel had already hit two 3-pointers in the early going and hit his third 14 seconds later to give Hood the 11-10 advantage. 
  • The Blazers led by three, 39-36, but an 8-2 stretch grew the lead to nine on a 3-pointer by Wang with 3:09 to play, 47-39. Despite 19 first half points from Mason Wang, Widener was able to pull back within three, 47-44, at the half. 

Analysis

  • Hood shot a season-best 53 percent from the floor (35-of-66), while Widener knocked down just 38 percent of its field goals (23-of-61). 
  • The Blazers went 13-for-33 from 3-point range (39 percent) in the game. 
  • Both teams grabbed 34 rebounds. 
  • Wang's eight steals helped Hood hold a 26-12 edge in fastbreak points. 
  • The Blazers outscored Widener in the paint 44-22. 
  • The Hood reserves finished with 26 points, while the Pride recorded just 13 bench points. 

For the Opponent

  • Five players scored in double figures for Widener, led by Steven Matlack's 15 points. Holden and Kolbey Woodard each had 14, Jared Peters scored 13 and Kenny Lewis notched 10. 
  • Woodard led the Pride with eight boards, Peters had six assists and Matlack added two blocks. 

Notes

  • Hood improved to 2-0 in the MAC Commonwealth and join Eastern as the lone 2-0 programs in the conference. The win was the fourth in a row for the Blazers, who moved to 5-2. 
  • Widener dropped to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
