ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led all scorers with 23 points, and Junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) recorded his third straight double-double and fourth of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, as the third-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan 65-53 in the ODAC opener for both teams.

How it Happened:

  • The Marlins tallied the first five points of the game before layups by junior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) and Mallory made it a one-point contest with 16:45 left in the first half. Two VWU buckets pushed the lead back to five before a three-pointer by Anthony made it 9-7 with 12 minutes remaining. The Marlins scored seven straight points to go up 16-7 before a triple by Anthony made it 16-10 with 7:45 left. VWU had a nine-point lead late before a follow by Mallory with under a minute remaining made it 26-19 at halftime.
  • A trey by Anthony sparked a 10-2 run, capped by a layup by sophomore Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax), as the Yellow Jackets took their first lead at 29-28 with 16:30 left. A layup by Anthony with 15 minutes remaining gave R-MC a 33-30 advantage. VWU used a 9-4 spurt to take a 39-37 edge before a three-pointer by Anthony with 12 minutes left put R-MC ahead for good. It started a 14-2 run that was finished by a triple from junior Loginn Norton (Chesterfield, Va./James River) as the Yellow Jackets led 51-41 with 7:50 remaining. VWU cut the deficit in half at 58-53 with two minutes left before Anthony had a three-pointer and a layup followed by a basket by senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) that made the final score 65-53.

By The Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets had three players score in double figures. Anthony had 23, Mallory added 16 and Funderburg finished with 11.
  • R-MC shot 78% from the floor (18-23) in the second half after shooting 28% in the first half (8-29). The Yellow Jackets hit five of six from behind the arc in the second half.
  • After shooting 50% in the first half (10-20), VWU was 6-23 (26%) in the second half.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 36-12 advantage on points in the paint.
  • R-MC had a 30-29 edge on the glass. Mallory had 11, followed by Anthony with six and Funderburg with five.
  • Talbert topped the team with five assists, while Anthony and Funderburg both dished out four.

For The Record:

  • The Yellow Jackets extended their home win streak to 35 games, a program record and the longest current home winning streak in Division III.
  • R-MC matched its lowest opponent total of the season at 53 and both came at home. The Yellow Jackets held Mary Washington to 53 points on Nov. 10 in Crenshaw Gym.
  • Mallory had two blocks to give him 118 for his career, the fifth-highest total in program history.
  • Anthony had one steal to give him 199 for his career, the top total in program history.
  • Anthony has 1,590 career points, moving past Matt Meehan into fifth place on the program's all-time scoring list.
  • Anthony has 619 career assists, third on R-MC's all-time list. He is two assists away from Rod Wood's second-place total of 621. Anthony is the first player in program history to amass 1,500 career points and 600 assists.
