NEW YORK – History was once again made at the Max Stern Athletic Center as the nationally ranked No. 2 Yeshiva University men's basketball team earned a come-from-behind Skyline victory over Manhattanville College, 78-56, on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Ryan Turell scored 51 points, which sets the school's single-game scoring record by an individual. The record was previously held by Sheldon Rokach ('66) who scored 48 points against Queens College on December 7, 1964.
During the game, Turell shot 21-for-30 from the field (70.0%) and 8-for-15 (53.3%) from 3-point range.
"Nice to have Ryan to turn to on a day where we just didn't perform offensively," Yeshiva University Head Coach Elliot Steinmetz said.
The Maccabees (8-0, 5-0 Skyline) struggled in the first half as the Valiants built a 28-16 advantage with 5:06 left to play until intermission. Turell gave the Maccabees a lift by draining a 3-point field goal to pull the Blue and White to within single-digits. After Manhattanville went back up by 10, YU scored the last four points of the half, capped off by a layup from junior Ofek Reef with 30 seconds to go, to shrink YU's disadvantage to 32-26 at the break.
Yeshiva was held to just 44.4% shooting during the first 20 minutes of the game and only shot 18.8% from beyond the arc.
The Maccabees turned the tide in the second stanza. After the Valiants opened the scoring, Yeshiva exploded with seven unanswered points to pull to within one, at 36-35, with 16:35 remaining in regulation time. A pair of free throws extended Manhattanville's lead to three, but Turell answered with a jumper. That began a string of 13 consecutive points by the Maccabees, capped off by another triple from Turell, to catapult the Macs to a 48-38 hold with 10:59 left to play in the second half.
After the Valiants cut the deficit to five, Yeshiva once again countered with a big run, this time scoring 11 of the game's next 13 points to propel Yeshiva to a 59-45 benefit. All 11 of those points were scored by Turell as he tallied two 3-point field goals, a traditional three-point play, and a successful jump shot during that stretch.
Later in the half, Turell converted a layup off a feed from graduate student Jordan Armstrong to give the Maccabees a commanding 76-50 advantage, which was Yeshiva's largest lead of the afternoon, with 2:58 left to play. That basket lifted Turell past Rokach for first place on YU's All-Time Single-Game Scoring List. On Yeshiva's next possession, he successfully executed a jump shot for his 50th and 51st point of the contest. Yeshiva went on to win the game, 78-56, extending its unbeaten streak to 44 games.
Yeshiva's defense held Manhattanville to just 37.0% shooting in the second half, compared to the Valiants shooting 53.5% from the field during the first 20 minutes of the game.
"I thought our defense picked up in a big way in the second half and then we have that guy to carry us today when we needed it on offense," Steinmetz said.
For Yeshiva, Reef netted 13 points during the afternoon. Graduate student Gabriel Leifer brought down a game-high 12 rebounds, dished out five assists, and forced four steals. Armstrong had eight rebounds, while junior Matan Zucker tallied nine points with five caroms. Sophomore Adi Markovich dished out five assists and clutched three boards.
Yeshiva will battle Skyline rival Farmingdale State College, at the Nold Hall Athletic Complex, on Wednesday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
