NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led all scorers with 19 points and junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 boards as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team registered a 78-58 victory over No. 24 New Jersey City on Day 1 of the CNU/Holiday Inn Invitational.

How it Happened:

  • After the Gothic Knights netted the first bucket of the game, Anthony and sophomore Ben Cerrato (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) both had five points in a 10-3 run as the Yellow Jackets went up 10-5 five minutes into the contest. NJCU had a 7-2 spurt to knot the score at 12-12 with 12 minutes left in the first half. A one-hander by senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) and a pair of layups by junior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) gave R-MC an 18-12 advantage midway through the first period. The Knights scored five straight to pull within one before the Yellow Jackets closed the half on a 16-4 spurt as R-MC led 34-21 at intermission. Funderburg and Anthony both had five points in that final run. Anthony led all scorers with 12 first-half points. The Yellow Jacket defense held the Knights to 27% shooting from the floor (8-30), including 0-5 from beyond the arc.
  • NJCU had the first basket of the second half before a follow by Mallory, a fast break layup by Cerrato and a triple by Anthony pushed the R-MC lead to 41-23 with 17:30 remaining. After the Knights connected on a layup, Mallory scored inside and Talbert added a follow as the advantage grew to 20 at 45-25 with 15:10 left. A layup by junior Loginn Norton (Chesterfield, Va./James River) pushed the lead to 22 at 55-33 with 9:50 remaining. NJCU scored the next five points before a layup by Talbert and two by Mallory put the Yellow Jackets up 61-38 with 8:20 left. A three-pointer by senior Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) gave R-MC its largest lead at 76-47 with three minutes remaining before posting the 78-58 win.

  • The Yellow Jackets had four players score in double figures. Anthony put up 19, Mallory and Robertson added 11, while Talbert tallied 10.
  • R-MC shot 50% from the floor (32-64) and 65% inside the arc (26-40). The Yellow Jackets had a 48-22 advantage on points in the paint.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 47-39 edge on the glass. Along with 10 rebounds by Mallory, Cerrato snared a career-best 10.
  • Sophomore Lance Johnson (South Riding, Va./Freedom) saw his first action of the season and scored two points.
