Wolves Fall in Final Seconds to Hawks

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — Hilbert College made a basket with four seconds left to take a one-point lead and Keuka College's last-second attempt went wide as the Hawks defeated the Wolves 99-98 in men's basketball at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center on Saturday.

Mason VanDeMortel (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) drained seven threes to post a career-high and team-leading 25 points for Keuka College (0-6). Devin Milton (Opelousas, La. / Beau Chene) scored 19 for the Wolves and Jahmr Jordan (Albany, N.Y. / Albany), DJ Billings (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Odyssey), and Daniel Obunse (Queens, N.Y. / Flushing) were also in double-digits.

Hilbert College 99 at Keuka College 98

The Wolves came out shooting on Saturday afternoon. Mason VanDeMortel scored the first eight for the Wolves, including a pair of threes as Keuka staked the early advantage. Kobe Schriver (Hooper, Utah / Roy) was hot from three in the first as well, going 3-4 from deep. Keuka's largest run in the first would be just seven points, but the Green and Gold built a double-digit lead over Hilbert. In total, VanDeMortel accounted for five of Keuka's nine first-half threes. The Wolves led by as many as 17 in the half, but Hilbert did not go away. The Hawks held Keuka off the board for the final three minutes of the half, scoring eight unanswered. Despite the run by the visitors, Keuka College remained ahead 51-46 at the half.

The Hawks continued their run in the second half, scoring the first four to tie the game at 51-51. The second half would consist of runs. Keuka College would pull ahead and Hilbert would answer, but never able to pull ahead. The game got tight midway through the second. Keuka answered Hilbert's offense with a pair of threes by Jahmr Jordan and one from Devin Milton. The final Jordan three gave the Wolves an 82-76 lead with nine minutes left. Jordan followed that with a steal and layup, but Hilbert cut back into it. A jumper by Daniel Obunse gave the Wolves a 95-86 lead with four minutes left. However, like the first half, Keuka College would be held off the board as Hilbert made a run. The Hawks scored 11 straight, taking the lead for the first time with 1:15 left to play. Keuka College, gunning for the lead, was fouled with 16 seconds left while shooting a three. DJ Billings went to the line and drained all three for the 98-97 lead. Hilbert would take the ball in and find a player down low for the go-ahead layup with four seconds left. Keuka pushed the ball up the floor by the three from the wing by Nana Oteng (Queens, N.Y. / Martin Luther) was wide at the buzzer as Hilbert College defeated Keuka College 99-98.

  • It was the second-straight one-point win for Hilbert. The Hawks defeated the Wolves 98-97 in their last meeting in 2019.
  • Overall, Keuka College is 9-15 against Hilbert College
  • The seven threes for Mason VanDeMortel tied for second-most in school history. It is the most by a Keuka player since Cliff Stevens hit seven against Bryn Athyn in February 2018
  • Keuka College shot a season-best 37.8% from three, going 17-45 from deep. 17 threes tied earlier efforts against Hobart and SUNY Canton for the most in program history

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will travel to Buffalo on Tuesday to face Medaille College. It will be a non-conference game this year, but an Empire 8 conference next year as the Mavericks are joining the conference in the fall of 2022.
