NEW YORK – The nationally ranked No. 2 Yeshiva University men's basketball team earned a convincing Skyline Conference victory over Purchase College, 98-69, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Tuesday evening. Yeshiva is now 7-0, and 4-0 in conference play, while extending its historic winning streak to 43 games.
Two milestones were accomplished. Senior Ryan Turell surpassed Lior Hod ('88) for fourth place on YU's All-Time Scoring List with 1,550 career points. Graduate student Gabriel Leifer eclipsed 500 career assists, the first to do so in school history. The Lawrence native now has 504 assists in his illustrious career to go along with 1,394 career points and 1,049 career rebounds.
"Their numbers are almost silly," Yeshiva university Head Coach Elliot Steinmetz said. "The impact they have had on this team and program aren't even measurable with numbers. But they are measurable with letters. Because those guys collect a lot of W's."
During YU's victory over Purchase, Turell had a double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds. The Los Angeles native dished out three assists and had just as many steals. Leifer just missed a triple-double with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists.
The Maccabees led from wire-to-wire. After taking a 45-30 lead into halftime, Yeshiva surged even more in the second stanza, going up by as many as 35 points and outscoring the opposition, 53-39.
The Macs' defense held the Panthers to just 37.5% shooting from the field, and 27.8% shooting from 3-point range, during the game.
Leifer distributed his 500th career assist with 2:10 remaining in the opening half as he dished the ball to fellow graduate student Jordan Armstrong, who converted a layup to put YU up, 37-30. Just 12 seconds into the second half, Turell buried a jump shot to move into a tie with Hod on the school's scoring list. On the next possession, Turell took a feed from Leifer and converted a layup to earn sole possession of fourth place on YU's All-Time Career Scoring List. Turell's monumental basket gave the Maccabees a comfortable 49-30 hold in the early stages of the second half. Yeshiva went on to earn its 43rd consecutive victory in convincing fashion.
For the evening, junior Ofek Reef had 16 points and five rebounds. Armstrong had a solid game with 11 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots. Senior Eitan Halpert netted 10 points, distributed three assists, and forced three steals. Junior Matan Zucker contributed with six points, including a traditional three-point play, and snatched three boards. Sophomore Oren Betesh had six points and three rebounds.
Yeshiva will have another home Skyline contest on Sunday, this time against Manhattanville College, at the Max Stern Athletic Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
