BROOKLYN – The nationally ranked No. 2 Yeshiva University men's basketball team extended its winning streak to 42 games on Thursday evening, thanks to a 94-57 Skyline victory over St. Joseph's College Brooklyn at The Hill Center. The Macs are now 6-0 overall and 3-0 in league games.
It was a milestone night for senior Ryan Turell as he eclipsed the 1,500-point mark for his career. The Los Angeles native opened the game by drilling a jump shot while being fouled for the 1,500th and 1,501st points of his illustrious collegiate career.
"It's cool but there's a greater goal in mind," Turell said when asked about the milestone. "It's all about winning a national championship!"
For the game, Turell led all players with 25 points. He now has 1,524 career points which bumps him to No. 5 on YU's All-Time Scoring List. The two-time D3hoops.com First Team All-American shot 10-for 16 from the field, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.
"Ryan is special, obviously," Yeshiva University Head Coach Elliot Steinmetz said. "These milestones couldn't happen to a harder working and more selfless kid."
The Maccabees never trailed at any point in the game, leading from wire-to-wire. The Blue and White shot 58.2% from the field and played strong defensively, holding the opposition to just 33.3% shooting.
"Loved our energy tonight on both sides of the ball," Steinmetz said.
The Maccabees led by 10 with 3:55 to go in the first half and then managed to put the game out of reach for the opposition by going on a 12-4 run to take a commanding 39-21 hold with 21 seconds remaining in the opening stanza. Graduate student Gabriel Leifer capped off the run with a layup off a feed from Turell. YU went into the half with a 39-22 advantage.
Senior Eitan Halpert opened the second half with a successful shot from downtown. That sparked a 17-4 run that inflated Yeshiva's cushion to 56-26. The Bears could not get back into the game as YU was able to pull away and remain undefeated with the decisive Skyline win.
Junior Ofek Reef had a strong game with 23 points, five assists, and four rebounds. The Plano native was 11-for-14 from the field. Leifer tallied a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while adding four assists. Fellow graduate student Ethan Lasko netted 15 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 3-for-5 from downtown. He also had three assists and just as many steals. Halpert converted three successful shots from downtown and had six assists, four steals, and three rebounds.
Yeshiva will take on Sarah Lawrence College, at the Campbell Sports Center, on Saturday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:45 p.m.
