Suchomel Jumper at Buzzer Gives UWL Road Win at Augsburg

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team, ranked 15th on D3hoops.com, improved to 4-0 on the season with a 75-74 overtime win at Augsburg University (Minn.) Wednesday night in Si Melby Hall. The Auggies drop to 1-1 on the season. 

UWL raced out to a 14-7 lead on an Ethan Anderson layup with 15:15 remaining in the first half. The Auggies later cut the deficit to 14-9, but the Eagles used a 16-2 run to lead 30-11 with 5:58 left after a Austin Westra jumper. UWL led, 42-24, at halftime. 

The Eagles shot 56.7% (17-of-30) from the field in the first half.  

Will Fuhrmann's jumper with 15:26 left in the game gave UWL a 49-26 lead.  The Eagles led, 57-37, with 11:36 remaining when the Auggies went on a 16-4 run to cut it to 61-53 with 7:00 left after Matt Carik's three-point field goal. Anderson's jumper with 4:59 remaining gave UWL a 64-53 advantage, but Augsburg (Minn.) ended regulation on a 15-4 run. Joe Palmer hit a pair of three-pointers to force a 66-66 tie with 1:39 left, but Anderson's layup gave UWL a two-point lead with 1:16 remaining. Conner Knoepfle made a layup for the Auggies to tie teh game at 68-68 with :16 left. Both teams missed potential game-winning jumpers in the final seconds. 

Augsburg (Minn.) took a 71-68 with 3:17 remaining in overtime on Carik's jumper, but Anderson connected on a three-point for UWL to force a 71-71 tie with 1:43 left. His jumper with 1:01 remaining gave the Eagles a 73-71 lead before Knoepfle made a pair of free throws with :43 left to tie the game. Palmer was fouled for Augsburg (Minn.) with :22 remaining and connected on one-of-two free throws to give the Auggies a 74-73 lead. UWL came down and Sean Suchomel hit the game-winning jumper from the right side at the buzzer as the Eagles improved to 2-0 all-time versus the Auggies. It was Suchomel's only points of the game.

UWL shot 50.0% from the field, including 30.0% (six-of-20) from three-point range, and 77.8% (seven-of-nine) at the free throw line. Anderson led the Eagles with 27 points, finishing 11-of-15 from the field, including three-of-four from three-point range. He was two-of-two at the line. Westra finished with 16 points off the bench, going six-of-eight from the field and four-of-five at the line. Wyatt Cook had 12 points, seven rebounds and team-high seven assists while Fuhrmann totaled 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Suchomel had a team-leading eight rebounds while also finishing with four assists. 

Augsburg (Minn.) shot 43.5% from the field, including 30.0% (nine-of-30) from three-point range, and 78.6% (11-of-14) at the line. Palmer led the Auggies with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Carik, Knoepfle and Rayquan Moore each finished with 11 points. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, November 20 hosting Buena Vista University (Iowa) at 3 p.m. in Mitchell Hall.
