NEWPORT, R.I. (November 16, 2021) - Salve Regina University senior forward Mikey Spencer (Abington, Mass.) became the 40th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone, and his game-high 23 points helped the Seahawks defeat the visiting Bears of the United States Coast Guard Academy, 73-70, in non-league men's basketball action at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.

Spencer's teammate, graduate student Kevin Kelly (Valhalla, N.Y.), came within two points of becoming the 41st Seahawk basketball player to reach the same milestone -- settling for a game-high 13 rebounds and a double-double with 13 points. Kelly also dished out five assists in the second straight win for the Seahawks over a NEWMAC opponent.

A 3-pointer by Spencer at 10:16 in the first half drew the Seahawks within two points (21-19) and pushed the third-year Seahawk over the threshold. After sophomore Clay Brochu (North Kingstown, R.I.) drained a trey at 7:54 to bring Salve Regina (2-2) within one point (26-25), the Bears (1-4) went on a 14-2 run to open up their largest lead of the game. Graduate student Cameron Collins (Montville, Conn.) hit a deep three to slow the run, but Coast Guard led by nine at the break (42-33).

Coast Guard shot 43.6 percent from the floor in the first half, and made seven of 18 3-pointers (38.9 percent behind the arc), but was held below 29 percent shooting in the second half and missed on all of its 14 attempts from long range. The game featured 10 lead changes and seven ties, while Salve Regina's largest lead was only four points (70-66; 3:37 remaining) following a Kevin Kelly driving layup.

Senior Tyler Perez (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) paced the Bears with 14 points on the night, 10 in the first half. Madison Maloney (Wilmington, N.C.) added 12 points on 4-of-8 from the floor and four of five from the line. Ben Yagey (Highland Ranch, Colo.) had 11 points by intermission, but was held scoreless in the final 20 minutes. Jack Brunswick (Acworth, Ga.) reached double digits as well with 10 points. Perez and Maloney each had 10 boards in the loss.

Collins continued with his consistent play while finishing with 16 points for Salve Regina.

The Seahawks return to Rodgers Recreation Center action when they host the Falcons of Fisher College at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Coast Guard will host Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) rival Roger Williams University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
