DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Five members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team scored in double figures as the Corsairs cruised to a 93-63 victory in their season opener against Wheaton College at the Tripp Athletic Center in the LaFrance Hospitality Tournament.
UMass Dartmouth (1-0) was led by senior Marcus Azor, who finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks. Junior Jackson Zancan tallied 15 points, five assists and four rebounds, while graduate student Jake Ashworth recorded 12 points on 4-of-5 from 3-point range with four rebounds and three assists. Off the bench, senior Dhalyn Sanders-Dyer had 17 points on 7-of-11 from the field and sophomore Isaac Percy had 10 points and four boards. Senior Adam Seablom did a bit of everything with five points, six rebounds and six assists.
Four players for Wheaton (0-1) were in double figures led by 18 from junior Alex Carlisle, while junior Evan Cook and freshman Duncan Bubar each registered 10 points and nine boards.
Ashworth sunk the first bucket of the season with a triple 30 seconds in. The Corsairs then took an early, 14-9, lead at the 14:14 mark after another Ashworth trifecta and baskets from Azor and Zancan. Wheaton then put together its best stretch of the game, outscoring UMassD, 21-4, over a seven-minute span, to take its largest lead of the night, 30-18, with 6:31 until the break.
Seven consecutive points from Zancan then sparked a 21-3 run to close the half. Azor had seven points in that stretch and Sanders-Dyer hit a jumper with 13 seconds on the clock to extend the UMass Dartmouth advantage to 39-33 at the midway point.
The second half is where the offense took off, as the Corsairs racked up 54 points in the frame. Wheaton scored the first points of the second to cut the deficit to four, but that was as close as it would get. Azor connected on a 3-pointer and junior John Martins Jr. sunk another from beyond the arc. Percy then converted an and-one and hit a triple with 13:10 to go to balloon the lead to 60-45.
Ashworth, Seablom and Sanders-Dyer all drilled 3-pointers in the final minutes as Azor continued to score inside, putting the game completely out of reach and moving the Corsairs to the tip-off tournament championship.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Fitchburg State in the LaFrance Hospitality Tournament Championship on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Falcons beat New England College, 95-89, in the early game.
