#1 R-MC Men’s Hoops Outlasts CMU 70-61

FREDERICK, Md. – Junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) matched his career high with 21 points as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team downed Carnegie Mellon 70-61 in the first round of the MMI Tipoff Tournament, hosted by Hood College.

How it Happened:

  • The Tartans bolted to a 10-0 lead before a layup by sophomore Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) broke the streak with 15:30 left in the first period. His bucket sparked a 15-0 run, which was highlighted by three steals and two baskets by Mallory, as the Yellow Jackets took a 15-12 lead with 8:45 remaining. R-MC trailed 20-19 before a pair of free throws by junior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) put the Yellow Jackets ahead for good at 21-20 with four minutes left. Talbert added a pair of layups to make it a 6-0 spurt as R-MC led 25-20 with two minutes remaining. CMU would tally the final three points of the period and trail 25-23 at halftime.
  • Mallory had six points and junior Loginn Norton (Chesterfield, Va./James River) scored five as the Yellow Jackets scored the first 13 points of the second half to go up 38-23 with 15:15 left in the period. The Tartans had a pair of buckets, but three-pointers by seniors DaQuan Morris (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill School) and Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) gave R-MC a 44-27 advantage with 14 minutes remaining. CMU scored seven straight to cut the deficit to 10 before a buckets by senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Mallory made it 48-34 with 10:10 left. A layup by Talbert with 5:30 remaining gave the Yellow Jackets a lead of 60-46. The Tartans closed to within seven before a layup by Anthony and a triple by Norton put R-MC on top 65-53 with two minutes left. CMU scored six straight to make it a six-point contest at 65-59 with 47 seconds left. Mallory made three of four free throws and Norton made a layup to make it 70-59 with 22 seconds remaining. The Tartans tallied the final bucket to make the final score 70-61.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had three score in double figures. Along with 21 by Mallory, Talbert had 11 and Norton finished with a career-best 10.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 32-26 advantage on the boards. Mallory and Mbangue both had nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end.
