Macalester tops St. Olaf in closing seconds of overtime in finale

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Tyler McFarland hit the game-winning three-pointer with 3.7 seconds remaining in overtime to give Macalester College a 78-77 victory over the St. Olaf College men's basketball team in its season finale on Tuesday evening at Skoglund Center.

In the fourth and final meeting between the two programs this season, St. Olaf (2-2) led 77-73 with 1:02 left in overtime after a three-pointer by Charlie Haff, but McFarland scored the final five points in the last 52 seconds to give the Scots a split of the series.

After Haff's three-pointer, McFarland hit a jumper in the paint with 52 seconds remaining to bring Macalester within two. After the Scots got a stop, Tom Andrae found McFarland at the top of the key for the game-winner with under four seconds to go. St. Olaf got up a desperation attempt at the buzzer but it was off the mark.

McFarland scored a game-high 22 points off the bench for the Scots, including all nine of the visitor's points in overtime, hitting 6-of-10 shots from the field and 8-of-9 free throws.

Haff, Michael Meriggioli, and Jake Weber each scored 15 points for St. Olaf. Meriggioli was 5-for-8 from the field and added seven rebounds, five blocks, two assists, and a steal. Haff hit three three-pointers off the bench for St. Olaf, which was 10-for-25 (40.0 percent) from behind the arc in the game.

After trailing 16-5 early, the Oles outscored the Scots by a 33-11 margin over the final 12:26 of the first half to take a 38-27 lead at the break. Eight Oles scored in the half as St. Olaf shot 53.6 percent (15-for-28) from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

Macalester started the second half by hitting back-to-back three-pointers to quickly get back within five. After St. Olaf pushed its lead back to 11 with just under 16 minutes left in regulation, the Scots rattled off a 9-0 run to close the gap to two, 48-46, with 11:38 to go.

First year Connor Martin broke a 61-61 tie with a pair of free throws and Carter Uphus followed with a dunk with 3:27 left to put St. Olaf up 65-61. A jumper by McFarland inside the final minute made it a one-point game before Meriggioli hit a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left to push the Oles' lead back to three, 69-66.

With time winding down, Michael Poker hit a three-pointer with 0.7 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime. Martin and Haff sank three-pointers two minutes apart in overtime to give St. Olaf a 77-73 lead, setting the stage for McFarland's late heroics.

The Scots were 11-for-22 (50.0 percent) from behind the arc in the game, including 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) in the second half, and got 38 points from their bench, thanks largely to McFarland's 22-point effort.
