Martin pours in 20, St. Olaf falls at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – First year Connor Martin poured in a career-high 20 points, but the St. Olaf College men's basketball team could not overcome Jackson Henningfield's 33-point, 15-rebound double-double in a 72-59 loss at Macalester College on Sunday afternoon.

Martin, the reigning Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week, shot 8-for-11 from the field to lead the St. Olaf (2-1) in scoring for the second time in three games this season. Henningfield, meanwhile, shot 14-for-23 from the floor to lead Macalester (1-2) to its first victory in the four-game schedule between the two programs.

The Scots shot 51.7 percent (15-for-29) from the field in the opening 20 minutes on their way to a 35-24 halftime lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by Charlie Haff and Martin had the Oles within three, 19-16, with eight minutes to go in the half before a 9-2 run by Macalester gave the hosts a double-digit-point lead.

Henningfield opened the second half with a three-pointer to extend the Scots' lead to 14 and Macalester led by at least 10 points the rest of the way. Trailing 54-37 with 9:22 remaining, St. Olaf scored seven-straight points, starting with a three-point play by Josh Albers, to get within 10, but Henningfield scored five points on the next two offensive possessions for the Scots.

Martin added three assists and three steals to his 20-point performance but was the only Ole in double figures. Niko Polydorou added eight points off the bench for St. Olaf, which shot 50.0 percent (12-for-24) in the second half after hitting at a 38.5 percent (10-for-26) before the break.

Tyler McFarland and Eric Sathy joined Henningfield in double figures for Macalester with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The teams conclude their four-game schedule on Tuesday, March 30 at 7 p.m. at Skoglund Center. No fans are permitted at the game due to MIAC COVID-19 protocols.
