Balanced Attack Leads No. 1 R-MC Men’s Hoops past BC

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) put up 19 points, one of five Yellow Jackets to score in double figures, as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated Bridgewater 99-68 in ODAC action on Wednesday evening in Crenshaw Gymnasium.

How it Happened:

  • Senior Anthony Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) had a pair of buckets and senor Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) sank a three-pointer as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick 12-5 lead three minutes into the contest. A pair of treys by junior Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) sandwiched around a layup by sophomore Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) put R-MC up 20-7 advantage with 13:55 left in the first half. A triple by Anthony capped a 13-2 spurt as the home team took a 25-7 lead with 13:25 remaining. A layup by freshman Lance Johnson (South Riding, Va./Freedom) gave R-MC a 20-point lead, and two free throws by Talbert made it 31-9 with 11 minutes left. Three-pointers by sophomore Loginn Norton (Chesterfield, Va./James River) and Robertson were followed by two foul shots by Mallory which gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of the first half at 44-17 with 6:28 remaining. The Eagles scored nine straight before a layup by senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) on a pretty assist by Talbert ended the run as the Yellow Jackets led 46-26 with 3:30 left. Robertson hit two free throws with less than a second remaining as R-MC took a 57-33 lead at the break. Robertson had 13 points, while Anthony put in nine and Funderburg added eight.
  • Talbert had a three-pointer and a layup to start the second half as the advantage ballooned to 29 at 62-33. A steal and dunk by Talbert capped a 7-0 spurt to make it 71-37 with 15:50 left in the second period. BC had a 14-4 run before Anthony sank a jumper to make it 77-51 with 9:30 remaining. A layup by Talbert pushed the advantage to 31 at 88-57 with 5:55 left. Norton hit a trey for the final bucket of the game as R-MC recorded the 99-68 victory.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had five score in double figures for the first time this season. Along with 19 by Talbert, Robertson had 16, Anthony added 13, Woods tallied 11 and Funderburg finished with 10.
  • The Yellow Jackets shot a season-high 55.2% from the floor, hitting 37 of 67 shots.
  • R-MC shot 48.0% from behind the arc. Robertson went 4 for 6, while Anthony was a perfect 3 for 3.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 36-25 advantage on the boards. Funderburg, Mallory and freshman Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) each grabbed five, while Talbert and Robertson both had four.
  • R-MC had 22 assists on its 37 field goals. Woods had six, while Anthony dished out five and Funderburg had a career-best four.
  • Anthony had three of the team's seven steals.

For The Record

  • The Yellow Jackets extended their home winning streak to 31 games, the longest current streak in Division III.
  • R-MC was attempting to score 100 points in consecutive games for the first time since 1964.
  • Freshman Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) hit a three-pointer in the second half, his first collegiate points.
  • Johnson matched his season high with six points. Norton also matched his season high with six points.
  • Anthony has 1,315 career points, moving past Bob Minutella and Justin Short into 19th place on R-MC all-time scoring list.
  • Anthony has 521 career assists, good for third place in program history.
  • Anthony has 176 career steals, good for fifth place in program history.
