W&J men improve to 4-1 after 97-70 win over Franciscan

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's basketball team had five players score in double figures and 13 players score overall as the Presidents defeated Franciscan 97-70 at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
 
W&J advances to a 4-1 while Franciscan drops to 1-3 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play.
 
The Presidents' 97 points were the most for the men's basketball team since W&J scored 99 points against Penn State DuBois on Dec. 22, 2014. It's the most for the Presidents against a conference opponent since dropping 100 on Waynesburg on Jan. 2, 2013.
 
Nicholas Campalong (Sewickley, Pa./Ambridge) posted a team-high 14 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Zach Queen (Jeannette, Pa./Hempfield Area) connected on five-of-six shots from the field on his way to 13 points and four assists.
 
Cameron Seemann (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) had 12 points and seven rebounds. Kyran Mitchell(Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) recorded 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals. Jake Livingston(Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) had 10 points in 17 minutes of action.
 
Nick Gearhart (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) set career highs with eight points and nine rebounds in 17 minutes of action. Okikiola Agbale (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) had eight points and six rebounds in nine minutes of play. J.R. Mazza (Bridgeport, W.Va./University) posted seven points in 11 minutes.
 
Franciscan jumped out to a 16-9 advantage through the game's first seven minutes of action with five different Barons contributing to Franciscan's quick start.
 
The Presidents reeled off eight-straight points in less than two minutes to retake a 17-16 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half. Queen and Mitchell combined for all eight points in the spurt as Queen connected on a three, Mitchell converted a three-point play and Mitchell found Queen for a layup.
 
A three pointer by Franciscan's Nicholas Allienello put the Barons ahead 23-21 with 7:42 left in the first half, but Gearhart jumpstarted another 8-0 Presidents reponse. Geahart connected on a jumper, down a pair of free throws and Campalong and Alexander Skowrin scored in the 90-second scoring flurry that pushed the Presidents ahead 29-23 with 6:17 left in the half.
 
Franciscan got back within two (33-31) with 4:41 left to go in the half, but W&J scored the next six points and a Livingston layup pushed the Presidents' advantage into double-digits with just over two minutes left in the half. W&J scored twice in the final 10 seconds of the half with Mitchell and Campalong each converting layups, giving the Presidents a 52-40 halftime advantage.
 
The Presidents opened the second half with a 17-2 run as the Presidents pushed their advantage to 27 (69-42) with 14:44 left in regulation.
 
Beckett Connelly (Beaver, Pa./Beaver), Ryan Parise (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and Isaiah Langston(Coraopolis, Pa./Cornell) all scored in the second half for the Presidents.
 
W&J set season-highs in points, assists (21), field goal percentage (56.7 percent) and free throws made (17-of-24). The Presidents outrebounded the Barons 56-33 and outscored Franciscan 68-26 in the paint.
 
W&J returns to action on Wednesday evening at Bethany.
