The Oglethorpe men's basketball team saw their season come to a close Sunday, as the fourth-seeded Stormy Petrels fell to an outstanding effort from fifth-seeded Millsaps 93-68 in the first round of the SAA Tournament at Dorough Field House. The loss ended Oglethorpe's season at 14-12 overall.

The Petrels started the game off on the wrong foot and never really got going against the visiting Majors, who shot 49.3 percent from the floor and 40 percent from 3-point range. Oglethorpe led 5-2 in the opening 3 minutes, but the Majors quickly turned it around and outscored the home side 26-8 over an 11-minute run, taking a 28-13 lead with just under 6 minutes left in the period. An Oglethorpe run cut it to a 10-point game with just over 5:30 left, but the visitors went on an 11-0 run to take a 40-21 lead with just under 2 minutes left, then extended their lead to 23 points before ending the half up 47-25.

Oglethorpe began the second half in decent shape, going on a 13-3 run over 2:15 to cut the Millsaps lead from 23 all the way down to 13 points, 53-40, with just under 16:30 to go. The Majors began to put the game away when they went on a 21-9 spurt and took a 74-49 lead with 8:40 on the clock. The Petrels proved unable to come back from that, and the visitors pulled out to the 25-point win.

Junior guard Lane Foster led the Petrels with 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Fellow junior guard Dimetri Chambers added 12 points, while sophomore guard Carlos Sone contributed 10.

Millsaps dominated the Petrels on the glass, outdoing them 51-28 in the category and outscoring them 20-4 in second chance points.

"We had a disappointing day today," said Oglethorpe head coach Philip Ponder. "Millsaps is probably playing as well as anyone in the league right now, and they were just better than us today. They have Division I size and when they shoot it like they did today, it will be tough for anyone to beat them. We didn't play our best today, but I'm not going to let a bad day take away from what this group did this year. We were the youngest and smallest team in the league, but we won close game after close game this year with a ton of grit. We just ran into a buzzsaw today. I'm still proud of this group of guys and, with no seniors, the future is bright."
