Waltham, Mass., Feb. 21, 2020 – Senior DeVaughn Rucker tied his career-high with 25 points and junior Jack Nolan added 24 to lead the No. 13-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team to a 77-70 win at Brandeis University Friday in Waltham, Mass.
WashU won its third-straight game to improve to 19-4 and 10-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Brandeis dropped to 15-8 and 7-5 in the league. WashU and No. 8 Emory are tied for first place in the conference standings with two games remaining.
Junior Payden Webb scored 14 points on four threes off the bench as WashU shot 46.6 percent (27-58) from the field and hit 14-of-18 from the free throw line. The Bears outrebounded Brandeis 38-37, and limited the Judges to just six free-throw attempts.
Webb's three-pointer from the wing gave WashU the early 14-11 advantage and then a steal and a bucket by sophomore Charlie Jacob pushed the advantage to 16-11. Brandeis answered with a 5-0 run to tie the score at 16-16.
Nolan's three put WashU up 27-23, but a 10-3 run by the Judges was highlighted by a Chandler Jones dunk to give Brandeis a 33-30 lead with 2:19 before half.
Brandeis took a 38-34 lead to half as Nolan led the Bears with nine points, while Rucker and Webb added eight points apiece. WashU shot 45.2 percent (14-31) from the field, but hit just 3-of-11 from three-point range.
Rucker scored the first seven points of the half for WashU as the Bears trailed by a point, and then a three-point play by sophomore Justin Hardy tied it up at 46-46 with 13:18 to play.
A three-pointer by Webb and a three-point play by Nolan pushed the lead to 52-48 and forced a Brandeis timeout with 1135 to play. The Bears put the game out of reach with a 17-3 run, highlighted by Nolan's three which pushed the lead to double figures (69-57) with 4:29 to play.
Jones (14), Eric D'Aguanno (14) and Collin Sawyer (11) all scored in double figures for the Brandeis, which shot 40.3 percent (27-67) from the field.
WashU takes on New York University on Sunday, Feb. 23, at Noon. The game will be played Hunter College at the Sportsplex on 68th St. and Lexington Ave.
