Hampden-Sydney Basketball Falls On The Road At Nationally-Ranked No. 2 Randolph-Macon 84-58

ASHLAND, Va. -- Freshman Ryan Clements/Conyers, Ga. scored 14 points, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 84-58 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball decision on the road at archrival and nationally-ranked No. 2 Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday night in Ashland. Sophomore Jack Wyatt/Richmond added 12 points for the visiting Tigers (13-11, 8-7), who trailed 49-37 at halftime. Buzz Anthony scored a game-high 19 points for the Yellow Jackets (23-1, 15-0), who won their 11th-straight game.

R-MC scored the first seven points of the contest toward an early 20-6 advantage just 6:08 into the game behind eight quick points from Anthony, including a pair of three-point field goals, as well as two three-pointers from Corey Bays. H-SC used a 7-4 run to close the margin to 24-13 at 11:56, getting a three-pointer of its own from senior captain Kevin Quinn/Apex, N.C. The Yellow Jackets pushed the advantage to 33-15 with 9:48 on the first-half clock, getting three-straight triples from distance, and the hosts led 37-20 at 6:54 after two free throws. The Tigers, however, battled back and outscored their hosts 17-12 over the final 6:31 to close to within 49-37 at the intermission. Sophomore Cole Atwood/Mount Olive, N.C., junior captain Jake Hahn/Ruckersville, Clements, Quinn and Wyatt each had three-pointers during the late run, while Clements finished with 12 first-half points.

H-SC still trailed by 12 points early in the second half at 17:40 following a layup by Wyatt that made it 51-39. R-MC, though, scored the next seven points to lead 58-39 with 13:05 left, and the Yellow Jackets continued to stretch the advantage, leading 75-44 with 7:07 remaining. The Tigers did reduce the margin to 79-58 with just 1:15 left on the clock after a late 14-4 run, but the hosts scored the final five points of the contest to provide for the final margin. Senior Chaise Johnson/Richmond and freshman True Johnson/Bethesda, Md. scored seven and five points, respectively, with each connecting on late three-pointers.

Clements led H-SC with his 14 points, adding a game-high eight rebounds, along with four assists. Wyatt finished with his 12 points, adding six rebounds for the Tigers. Chaise Johnson had nine points, Quinn contributed six points, including 2-3 three-pointers, and True Johnson added a career-high five points off the bench. Hahn had five rebounds and a game-high five assists. H-SC shot 48% (23-48) from the field, including 36% (8-22) on three-pointers, and 80% (4-5) at the free throw line.

Anthony led R-MC with his game-high 19 points, adding game-highs of five assists and five steals. Bays and Terry Woods each finished with 12 points for the Yellow Jackets. R-MC shot 53% (32-60) from the field, including 50% (15-30) on three-pointers, and 83% (5-6) at the line.

H-SC returns home to face conference opponent Bridgewater College in the regular-season finale on Saturday, February 22, at 2 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House on Senior Day. Chaise Johnson and Kevin Quinn will be recognized during a special pre-game ceremony.
