The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team led for all but 21 seconds on Sunday afternoon in a 90-60 win over New York University on Sunday afternoon at historic Adelbert Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio to finish Throwback Weekend. The Spartans improve to 11-9 on the season with their third straight victory and 4-5 in the University Athletic Association. The Violets fall to 8-12 overall and 1-8 in the UAA.

Four Spartans scored in double figures and 12 members of the squad scored in the contest, with first-year forward Cole Frilling leading the team with 19 points. Junior guard Antonio Ionadi added 17 points on six-of-eight shooting, including five-of-six from three-point range. Off the bench, sophomore forward Ryan Newton scored 12 points and sophomore guard Robert Faller added 11. Senior forward Michael Hollis led the team with nine rebounds.

The Spartans opened an early four-point lead, pulling ahead 11-7 five minutes into the contest. A few minutes later, they gained a double-double digit advantage, 19-9, on a layup from Hollis. CWRU started the game hot from the field, making eight of their first 11 shots (72.7%).

First-year guard Jason Lewis scored five points as part of a 9-0 Spartan run that pushed the lead to 17 midway through the half. After NYU cut the CWRU lead to just 11 with seven minutes to go in the first half, Ionadi responded with a three-pointer to end the NYU run. The three-pointer ignited a 17-2 Spartan run that gave the team a 26-point lead, 45-19, its largest of the first half. The Spartans never looked back, leading by at least 20 points for the rest of the game. Case Western Reserve led by as many as 34 points in the game.

CWRU ended the half with a 47-22 advantage, with Ionadi and Frilling each scoring a team-high 11 points in the first 20 minutes. The team finished the half shooting 62.5% from the field, and the 47 points are their most in the first half of any game this season.

Case Western Reserve also defended well in the opening half, holding NYU to just 25.0% shooting from the field and without a three-pointer. Overall, the Spartans held the Violets to just 34.8% from the field in the game and 26.7% from three-point range.

Over a stretch in the early in the second half, the Spartans made five straight three-point attempts, with two makes each from Frilling and senior guard Sam Hansen and one from Ionadi. The team finished with 13 three-pointers in the game on 30 attempts, two makes shy of the season-high of 15 against NYU last weekend.

During Sunday's game, the Spartans celebrated Throwback Weekend honoring the history of the University by wearing the jerseys of the Case Institute of Technology Rough Riders, one of the schools that later would become CWRU.
