Seemann records career-high 36 points as W&J beats Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Junior guard Cameron Seemann(Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) scored a career-high 36 points to power the Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team to an 83-72 road victory over Thiel College Saturday afternoon in Mercer County.

The 36 points is the most by a Presidents' Athletic Conference player this season and the most by a President since Brian Lindquist scored 37 points in a win over Chatham on Feb. 4, 2017.

The win gives the Presidents an important season sweep of the Tomcats. W&J improves to 7-6 in PAC play and 12-10 overall. The loss drops Thiel to 5-7 in the league and 6-13 overall.

The Presidents got off to a slow start offensively as the host Tomcats built an early 14-3 lead less than five minutes into the game. After an exchange of baskets made the score 16-5, the Presidents used a sizeable run to get themselves back into the game. W&J recorded 13 of the next 15 points to pull within a basket at 18-16 with 10:47 to play in the opening half. Seemann tallied the first six points and Jonathan DeVito (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) knocked down a triple to cap the scoring run.

W&J remained within striking distance before using another run late in the first half to take the lead. Facing a six-point deficit (31-25), the Presidents reeled off a 10-0 run to take a 35-31 advantage with 3:34 to play in the half. W&J benefited from a pair of layups by Jonathan Howland (Goshen, Ky./North Oldham) during the spurt.

A late three-pointer by Zach Queen (Jeannette, Pa./Hempfield) and a jumper by Seemann just before the buzzer gave W&J a 40-32 edge at halftime. Seemann paced all scorers with 18 first half points. That total matched the most by Seemann in an entire game this season.

The Presidents pushed their lead into double figures (53-41) with a three-pointer by DeVito at the 13:56 mark of the second half. The Tomcats would respond, as they eventually scored seven straight points to cut the W&J lead to 60-57 with 8:23 to play.

Seemann and the Presidents would not be denied on this day, as the visitors ripped off a 14-1 run to extend the lead to 74-58 with just under five minutes to play. Seemann scored eight points during the run while Queen tossed in a three.

Alexander Skowron (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) registered 12 points off the bench. DeVito and Primo Zini(Morgantown, W.Va./Trinity Christian) finished with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Queen dished out a career-high seven assists in the victory.

W&J held advantages in points off turnovers (23-13), points in the paint (32-20), second chance points (13-8) and bench points (27-21).

The Presidents return home to face Waynesburg University in another PAC tilt on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The doubleheader will be broadcast by the PAC Sports Network.
