Case Western Reserve University first-year forward Cole Frilling scored a career-high 30 points on Sunday afternoon, leading the Spartans to an 85-77 win at New York University in New York, New York.

The victory snapped a five game losing streak for the Spartans, who improved to 9-9 overall, and reached the halfway point of the University Athletic Association season with a 2-5 conference record. NYU dropped to 7-11 overall and to 0-7 in league play.

Frilling, the UAA leader in points per game during conference play, was efficient both inside and outside the perimeter on Sunday, reaching the 30-point mark for the first time in his career with a 12-of-18 shooting performance overall and connecting on four-of-six shots from behind the three-point line. He added five rebounds, an assist and a steal in the game.

Sophomore guard Robert Faller came off the bench to score 16 points, shooting seven-of-14 overall and two-of-six from beyond the arc, while leading the team with seven rebounds and six assists. Junior guard Antonio Ionadi added 12 points, connecting on four-of-10 shots from behind the three-point line on Sunday.

As a team, the Spartans shot a season-high 52.9% (31-of-59) overall and went 48.4% (15-of-31) on three-point attempts, their second-best mark in a UAA game this season.

The game came down to a key stretch of play over the final four minutes. With the Spartans' trailing by two and 3:20 remaining, CWRU scored 14 of the final 20 points to secure the victory. Newton tied the score at 71-71 with a layup, and within a minute, junior guard Ignas Masiulionis hit his first of two threes down the stretch to put CWRU back ahead. NYU would pull within a point on a layup, but a three pointer by Frilling with just under two minutes left expanded the Spartans' lead back to four points, and another three by Masiulionis with 1:14 to go made the score 80-73 and all but locked up the win for CWRU. Three free throws by Newton and two from Frilling in the final minute of play helped keep the game out of reach for the Violets.

Case Western Reserve led by as many as 10 points in the game, going ahead 23-13 with 12:18 left in the opening half on a three pointer by Frilling, who finished the opening 20 minutes of play with 17 points. The Violets would cut the lead back to a point, 33-32, with 5:42 to play, but the Spartans remained ahead for the rest of the half, taking a 43-38 advantage into the break.

The Spartans would go nearly four minutes without a basket to start the second half, allowing NYU to tie the game at 43-43, before a three pointer by Ionadi with 16:12 left in the game put the Spartans back in front. The score remained within six points for most of the rest of the half, until CWRU was able to pull away at the end of the game.

The win was the Spartans' second in the last three years on the road at NYU, after previously not having won in the Big Apple since the 1999-00 campaign.

Case Western Reserve will return home next weekend to begin the second half of their conference schedule, as both Brandeis and NYU will be making the return trip to Cleveland. The Spartans will host the Judges on Friday, February 7 at 8:00 p.m. and the Violets at noon on Sunday, February 9 as a part of CWRU's annual Throwback Weekend. Both games will be played at Historic Adelbert Gymnasium, and the Spartans will don their Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University throwback uniforms during the weekend.
