APPLETON, Wis. – Hannes Kogelnik '21 achieved something only two dozen-plus Grinnell College men's basketball players have done in the history of the program Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneer scored his 1,000th career point in a 118-106 loss at Lawrence University, becoming just the 28th player in the 120-year history of the Grinnell program to accomplish the feat.

Jackson Qualley '22 and Aiden Gilbert '23 led the Pioneers, who are 4-4 in the Midwest Conference and 8-7 in all games, with 21 points each. Kogelnik hit 50 percent from the 3-point line, going 6-of-12 while tallying 20 points.

Qualley added seven assists, Gilbert had a career-high three steals and Brad Geiman '21 blocked two shots to boost his career total to 121. That ranks third on the Pioneers' career chart.

Tyler Grumhaus '22 added seven rebounds for Grinnell, a career best for him.

After falling behind early, Grinnell rebounded in a big way with a 10-1 run. Trailing 12-10, Will Dubow '21 began the spurt with a jumper, Adam Phillips '23 drained a 3-pointer and Kogelnik made two free throws to put the Pioneers on top 17-12.

After a free throw by Lawrence, Kogelnik connected on a trey to push the Pioneers' lead to 20-13 with 13:41 left.

Grinnell later led by six before the Vikings closed the gap and took the lead. Grinnell grabbed its final cushion at 30-29 on a layup by Brady Vest '21 with 8:26 remaining, but the hosts countered with a five-point run to go up by four.

Lawrence, 4-4 in the MWC and 8-7 overall, gradually pulled away and led 60-46 at halftime.

Grinnell got as close as nine twice in the second half, the second time at 100-91 on a free throw by Gilbert, before Lawrence pulled away to secure the win.

Grinnell will attempt to get back on the winning track Tuesday with a game at Cornell College. Tip-off in Mount Vernon is at 5:30 p.m.
