Robertson Shoots #6 R-MC Men’s Hoops past GC 64-39

ASHLAND, Va. - Sophomore Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) sank a career-best five three-pointers, including four in the second half, as the sixth-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team downed Guilford 64-39 in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened:

  • After the Quakers had the first bucket of the game, senior Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) tallied eight straight points, with a jumper sandwiched by a pair of three-pointers. After a second GC basket. a trey by senior Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) sparked a 7-0  spurt as R-MC took a 15-4 lead with 15:30 left in the first half. Following a third field goal by the Quakers, freshman Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) had back-to-back layups to cap a 6-0 run as the lead grew to 21-6 with 11:45 remaining.  A baseline jumper by Junior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) extended the lead to 17 at 26-9 with 8:50 left. A 6-1 spurt by the Quakers cut the deficit to a dozen before a layup by junior Terry Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) halted the run. Talbert had a layup just before the horn as R-MC took a 34-20 lead at the break. The Yellow Jackets held the Quakers to 29% shooting from the floor (7-24) and 22% beyond the arc (2-9). Bays had eight points and Talbert added six. Freshman Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had six rebounds and Anthony dished out six assists.
  • Bays started the second half with a three-pointer to give the home team a 37-20 lead. GC scored the next seven points before a layup by Talbert stopped the run. Robertson had a pair of treys and Mallory added two buckets in a 14-3 run as the R-MC advantage grew to 21 at 51-30 with 8:45 remaining. After five straight points by the Quakers, Robertson hit another two three-pointers in an 8-0 run as the Yellow Jackets took a 59-35 lead with 4:20 left. Senior Kent Kilgroe (St. Petersburg, Fla./Shorecrest Prep) had a follow with 1:25 left to make the final a 25-point margin at 64-39.

By The Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets held the Quakers to 39 points, the lowest point total for an R-MC opponent this season. Other opponent lows included 12 field goals made and a three-point field goal percentage of 15.8%.(3-19). GC matched an opponent high by hitting 85.7% from the free throw line.(12-14).
  • R-MC had two score in double figures. Robertson had 15 and Bays chipped in 11. Mallory had nine and Talbert added eight.
  • Mallory pulled down a season-high 12 rebounds. He also had three blocks.
  • Woods also had a career-best six rebounds.
  • Anthony had nine assists and four steals.

For The Record

  • R-MC remains the only team without a loss in ODAC play. The Yellow Jackets are 7-0 in conference contests.
  • Guilford has not won in Ashland since January 20, 2010.
  • R-MC entered the game as the top team in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 55.0 points per contest.
  • The Yellow Jackets are second in the country in assist/turnover ratio at 1.81. R-MC had 23 assists and six turnovers, one away from its lowest turnover total of the season.
  • Anthony raised his career assist total to 401. He is just the fifth Yellow Jacket to reach 400 career assists.
