Balanced Attack Leads Hawks Over Houghton, 87-63

             ONEONTA, NY – Eleven different Hawks made it into the scoring column and seven players had at least nine points on Saturday as the Hartwick men's basketball team defeated Houghton 87-63 at Lambros Arena in an Empire 8 contest. The Hawks have now won three straight games and improve to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in league play. The Highlanders fall to 3-12 and 1-3.
            Pat Garey (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) led all Hawks with fifteen points. He connected on a trio of threes, grabbed four rebounds, and dished out four assists. Kyle Bradshaw (Tinton Falls, NJ/Manasquan) added 12 points, seven rebounds, and two treys. Austin Haskell (Kirkwood, NY/Susquehanna Valley) chipped in 12 points and four boards and Tommy Kelly (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) had 10 points, he tied for a game-high with five assists, and he hit two threes.
            The Highlanders netted the first five points to start the day, but four different Hawks scored in a 12-point spurt and they would lead for the duration of the game. Hartwick led by as many as 12 points in the first half but the Highlanders kept hanging around and they cut the lead to single point, 25-24, with 4:50 left. The Hawks, thanks to five different scorers, closed the half on a 16-7 run and the hit halftime up ten, 41-31.
            'Wick blew the game open in the second half as they out-scored Houghton 21-4 in the first seven minutes to grab a 27-point advantage, 62-35. The lead grew to its biggest of the game (28) a minute and a half later after a bucket from Calvin Seward (Bridgeport, CT/Fairchild Wheeler), who ended the day with a career-high nine points. He was perfect making all four of his shots from the floor and his only free-throw attempt while pulling down four rebounds.
            The Hawks led by at least 20 points for the next four minutes until Houghton got its deficit down to 16 with 6:54 left on the clock. It would be as close as the Highlanders would get, however, as 'Wick finished the game out-scoring the visitors by a 14-6 margin.
            Joining Seward with nine points was Bobby Connors (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) and Liam Drennan (Oyster Bay, NY/Chaminade). Connors also had a game-high 11 boards and a pair of steals. Drennan matched a College-best with his nine points to go along with three rebounds and three assists.

            The Hawks out-scored the Highlanders 44-16 in the paint on the day. They also registered 25 points off of 17 Houghton turnovers. The 'Wick bench accounted for 36 points in the contest.
            Hartwick shot 54.5% (36-for-66) from the field and 37% (10-for-27) from three-point range. The Hawks had a slim edge in rebounds, 39-38. Houghton made 34.3% (23-for-67) of its shots and 29.7% (11-of-37) from three.
            Isander Ramos-Net scored a game-high 20 points with nine rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Scottie Berghaus added 16 points and Jordan Holmes contributed 11. Each of the three Highlanders connected on three three-pointers.

            Hartwick returns to action next weekend with road conference games at Nazareth on Friday, January 24 and St. John Fisher on Saturday, January 25.
