St. Thomas sinks 19 treys in road victory over St. Mary's

No. 9-ranked Tommie Men's Basketball sank 19 baskets from 3-point range -- one off the school record -- to lead Saturday's 81-64 road victory at St. Mary's.

The Purple (13-2 overall, 9-1 MIAC), who had only seven turnovers, matched their season high of 19 made threes accomplished in a November win over ranked Nebraska Wesleyan.

Riley Miller (18 points), Anders Nelson (16) and Burt Hedstrom (15) combined for 49 points, including 13 treys. Miller added seven assists and five rebounds. The Tommies are 10-0 in games in his career where Miller scores nine or more points.

Coach Johnny Tauer's St. Thomas team has won 18 of its last 20 road games dating back 15 months.

The Toms led 37-32 at halftime before the Cardinals pulled within 37-36 early in the second half. The Cards trailed 42-40 moments later, but six different Tommies sank at least one 3-point basket to lead a 24-6 run over the next 6:00 for a 66-46 lead.

St. Mary's never got closer than nine points thereafter. The Cardinals (7-8. 4-6) were led by Eli Cave's 13 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in 37 minutes of play.

The Toms are home Monday to face Bethel (7 p.m.), then play Wednesday night at Macalester.
