No. 13 WashU Blows Past Case on Road

Cleveland, Ohio, Jan. 17, 2020 – Junior Payden Webb had 15 of his career-high 21 points in the second half to lead the No. 13-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team to an 88-66 win at Case Western Reserve University Friday in Cleveland.

Webb was 7-of-8 from three-point land as the Bears hit 12-of-24. WashU's bench scored a season-high 51 points in the victory.

WashU improved to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Case dropped to 8-5 and 1-1 in the UAA. 

Sophomore Kameron Mack and junior Jack Nolan each had 13 points, while sophomore Charlie Jacob (11 points) and senior DeVaughn Rucker (11 points, 11 rebounds) also scored in double figures. The double-double for Rucker was the second of his career.

WashU shot 51.6 percent (33-64) from the field and outrebounded Case 43-26.

Nolan had seven early points and his wing three gave WashU the early 13-6 lead and forced a CWRU timeout. The Bears hit six of their first seven shots from the field. Webb hit back-to-back treys to extend the lead to 24-13 with 10:31 to play.

WashU took the commanding 24-point lead (41-17) after a 17-0 run.

The Bears had the 47-23 advantage at half as WashU shot 61.1 percent (19-31) from the field. Nolan had 11 points, while Mack added 9 and Rucker had eight points and eight rebounds. WashU's bench had 18 first-half points and had just three turnovers.

After a three-pointer by Jacob, Case head coach Todd McGuinness was called for a technical foul just 40 seconds into the second half. Nolan canned two free-throws to make it 52-25.

Webb hit four-straight threes to extend the lead to 66-41 with 8:51 to play.

Cole Frilling (11 points) and Ryan Newton (10 points) scored in double figures for Case, which hit just 6-of-23 from three-point range. 

WashU concludes its two-game road trip on Sunday, Jan. 19, at Carnegie Mellon University. Tip-off is set for Noon (ET) in Pittsburgh.
