Mallory Double-Double Leads #4 R-MC Men’s Hoops past Ferrum 57-40

ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) recorded his third double-double with 19 points and a season-high 11 rebounds as the fourth-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team downed Ferrum 57-40 in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened:

  • Junior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had a layup to start the game and hit a jumper to cap a 9-0 start for the Yellow Jackets. The Panthers tallied the next eight points before a three-pointer by sophomore Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) ended the run, giving R-MC a 12-8 edge with 14:50 left in the first half. A layup by Mallory and a trey by freshman Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) pushed the lead back to nine at 17-8 with 12:10 remaining. A short jumper and a trey by Mallory gave the Yellow Jackets a double-digit lead at 22-10 with 11 minutes left.  The R-MC defense held Ferrum without a field goal over the final seven minutes of the half, outscoring the Panthers 8-1 in taking a 35-18 lead at intermission. Mallory paced the Yellow Jackets with 13 points and seven rebounds in the first period. R-MC held the Panthers to 18% shooting (6-33).
  • Junior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) had four of the first six points for the Yellow Jackets in the second half as the lead ballooned to 41-18 with 16:20 left. Over the two halves, R-MC held Ferrum without a field goal for more that 11 minutes. A three-pointer by senior Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) extended the lead to two dozen at 49-25 with six minutes remaining. A pair of free throws by Mallory gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 25 at 51-26 with 5:15 left. R-MC would hold on for a 57-40 victory.

By The Numbers:

  • The R-MC defense held Ferrum to 40 points, matching a season low for an opponent. The Yellow Jackets defeated St. Mary's 84-40 in the second game of the season. R-MC leads the nation in scoring defense, allowing 56.6 per game coming into the contest.
  • Mallory was the only player on either team to score in double figures. Anthony finished with eight points.
  • R-MC had a 47-39 edge on the boards. Along with the 11 from Mallory, Anthony and senior Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) both pulled down six. It matched a season-best for Turner.
  • Anthony dished out nine assists and had four steals.

For The Record

  • R-MC remains the only team without a loss in ODAC play. The Yellow Jackets are 5-0 in conference contests.
  • The Yellow Jackets are 12-0 all-time against the Panthers.
