ATLANTA, GA – The 6th-ranked Emory University basketball team is normally known for their high-powered offense, scoring over 91 points per game, ranking in the top-10 in Division III.
But on Saturday the Eagles defense was the strength, forcing 18 turnovers of the University of Rochester and holding the Yellowjackets to just 57 points in a 75-57 victory at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
The win pushes Emory's record to 11-1 on the season and is 1-0 in the University Athletic Association conference. Rochester falls to 9-3 and 0-1 in the UAA following the conference opener for both teams.
Junior Ryan Algier led the Yellowjackets in scoring with 15 points, adding six rebounds and three blocks. Ross Gang chipped in ten points and five rebounds while Patrick Benka scored nine points on three 3-pointers.
Emory's Nick Stuck and Lawrence Rowley each scored a game-high 20 points, while Romin Williams, EU's leading scorer, added 13 points.
After making three of their first four attempts from the field, Rochester went cold over the next seven minutes, not making another field goal until a Trent Noordsij jumper with 10:47 left in the first half, allowing Emory to lead 16-9.
The Eagles followed with a 6-0 run to build a 13-point lead, the highest of the first half.
Rochester then got into a bit of a rhythm on offense getting the ball in the paint and earning open looks from deep, hitting three long balls in a 13-6 spurt.
Emory answered back on both ends the rest of the half though, holding an 11-point margin at intermission.
Early in the second half, Rochester followed a timeout with another run, this time trimming a 13-point Emory lead to just three after a 13-3 run. T.C. Price ignited the rally with a corner three, Algier got a layup and Gang hit another 3-pointer.
After Emory's Stuck earned an old-fashioned 3-point play, Brian Amabilino Perez scored UR's next five points to cut the lead to 44-41 with 14:53 remaining in the game.
The trio of Williams, Rowley and Stuck then scored Emory's next 18 points as the Eagles turned it on both offensively and defensively over the next seven minutes to regain a comfortable cushion, going up 62-48 with 8:27 left.
For the game UR shot 41% from the floor, sinking 22-53 shots. Rochester was also 7-18 from distance, but struggled from the free throw line, making just 6-14 attempts (43%).
Emory compiled similar numbers from the floor, making 41% (24-58) overall and 33% (6-18) from long range, but outscored Rochester by 15 from the free throw line, making 21-28 attempts (75%). On the glass, EU held a 38-32 advantage.
Rochester's next contest is a road UAA matchup on Friday at Brandeis University, while Emory travels to the Big Apple to take on NYU the same night.
