Fast start lifts Drew men's basketball over Juniata

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's basketball team outscored Juniata College 45-18 in the first half en route to a 73-41 victory in Landmark Conference (LC) action Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.

The Rangers (11-2, 2-0 LC) have now won their last four games and have equaled the best start in team history, as the 1979-80 squad also opened 11-2.

All 15 players who dressed entered the game for Drew and 11 Rangers scored a point. The Drew bench accounted for 36 points.

Senior guard Riley Collins paced the Rangers with 13 points, four rebounds, and three steals while junior forward Lybrant Robinson posted 12 points. Junior guard Dylan Musial contributed a career-high 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting in just 10 minutes off the bench, and freshman forward Howard McBurnie, Jr. registered seven points and six rebounds. Junior guard Miles Lewis grabbed nine rebounds while junior forward Malachi Walker, Jr. blocked three shots.

John Kelly led the Eagles (3-10, 0-2 LC) with 11 points.

The Rangers led from start to finish after McBurnie canned a 3-pointer 24 seconds into the game. An 8-0 Drew run midway through the half made it an 11-point game (20-9), and the spurt mushroomed into a 19-5 run that was capped by a fastbreak dunk from Robinson that made it 32-12 with 4:58 on the clock. Six different Rangers scored during the run.

Drew widened the gap in the closing minutes of the half, ending the period on an 8-0 surge in which four different Rangers scored a point. 

The Rangers shot 54.8% from the field in their big opening half.

The hosts continued to pull away in the second period and pushed their lead to as much as 32 (54-22) with 14:19 left. The tremendous team effort continued early in the second half, when four different players scored over the first six minutes. The Eagles were unable to get closer than 24 the rest of the way.

The Rangers conclude their four-game homestand on Wednesday, when they host Susquehanna University in another Landmark Conference tilt.
