MADISON, N.J. - Junior forward Lybrant Robinson scored a game-high 25 points on a red-hot 6-of-8 performance from beyond the arc and the Drew University men's basketball team posted a 78-63 victory over Rutgers-Newark in a non-conference tilt Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.
As a team, the Rangers (9-2) shot a sizzling 64.0% (16-for-25) from beyond the arc, and their 16 triples are the fourth-most (tied) in program history.
Drew never trailed after opening the game on a 16-6 run. The Blue and Green are now off to their best start through 11 games since the 1979-80 team also opened 9-2.
Robinson posted his second-highest scoring total of the year, and his six treys were the most by a Ranger this season.
Senior guard Riley Collins added 14 points, seven assists, and three steals for Drew while classmate Michael Boice contributed 12 points off the bench. Freshman forward Howard McBurnie, Jr. notched nine points and six rebounds while senior guard Cole Hanntz netted eight points.
Chase Barneys led the Scarlet Raiders (8-4) with 19 points.
The Rangers were hot from the start, knocking down four treys during their early surge. Robinson drained a pair of 3's while junior forward Malachi Walker, Jr. and Collins also dialed long distance.
Rutgers-Newark drew to within five (22-17) with 11 minutes left in the opening half, only to see the Rangers push their lead back up to 14 after an 11-2 spurt that started with 3-pointers from Boice and Collins. However, the Scarlet Raiders climbed back into it with a 10-2 run and trailed just 42-37 at the half.
Robinson scored 14 of his points in the opening period, when he was 4-for-5 from deep.
Drew started the second half much like it did in the first, as McBurnie and Hanntz connected on back-to-back triples to kick off a 9-0 run. Robinson capped the outburst with a conventional 3-point play to make it 51-37, prompting a Rutgers-Newark timeout.
The Raiders whittled the deficit back into single digits midway through the half and trailed just 56-49 with 10:24 remaining. But Boice snapped a six-minute scoring drought for the Rangers when he dropped in a lay-up with 9:51 left, kicking off a decisive 8-1 run that gave the hosts a commanding 64-50 lead with 7:20 to go. Rutgers was unable to get closer than nine the rest of the way.
Drew continues its four-game homestand on Monday, when it takes on Carnegie Mellon University at 4 p.m. in its final non-conference game of the regular season.
