Cortland Beats Pitt Bradford, 98-73, to Open St. John Fisher Tourney

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) and Ben Walters (Lockport/Starpoint) combined for 49 points as Cortland defeated Pitt Bradford, 98-73, in the opening round of St. John Fisher's Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament.

The Red Dragons (5-2) will play in the championship game Monday at 3 p.m. versus St. John Fisher, which defeated SUNY Poly, 82-68, in Sunday's other first-round game. Pitt Bradford (1-8) will play SUNY Poly in the third-place game at 1 p.m.

Grunder finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds. He hit 11-of-16 shots from the field and four of his six free throws. Walters ended with a career-high 23 points. He made 8-of-12 shots overall, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range, and was 3-for-3 from the foul line. He also grabbed three rebounds.

Ryan Schmadel (Oriskany) made four 3-pointers off the bench and finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Brendan Fitzpatrick (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) hit both of his 3-pointers for six points, led the Red Dragons with six assists, and pulled down six rebounds.

Riley McEvoy (Homer) and Isaiah Preston (Penfield) each tallied a career-best five points. McEvoy also had career bests of five rebounds and two assists and Preston dished out a career-high three assists. Elijah Robinson (Valley Stream) and Jake DiSanto (Victor) each finished with a career-high three assists as well.

Alex Rodriguez led the Panthers with 15 points as he connected on five of his 10 3-pointers. Dylan Meyer added 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting and Justin Kusiappouh finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

Pitt Bradford led 22-14 with 10:19 left in the first half and was up 32-28 with 4:07 remaining in the period. Grunder scored seven straight points, followed by five points from Schmadel, to fuel a 15-1 Cortland run to end the half and the Red Dragons led 43-33 at intermission.

Cortland's lead grew to 20 at 58-38 less than four minutes into the second half and grew as large as 33 points twice in the final six minutes.

Cortland shot 62 percent from the floor in the second half and finished the game at 56 percent. The Red Dragons made 13-of-35 3-pointers (37 percent). Pitt Bradford shot 50 percent from the field in the first half but just 38 percent in the second half to finish at 43 percent. The Panthers made 9-of-26 treys (35 percent).
