Saint Vincent uses strong shooting effort to top W&J in PAC opener

LATROBE, Pa. -- Saint Vincent used a strong first half shooting effort to top the Washington & Jefferson College men's basketball team by a 93-71 score in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at the Carey Center in Latrobe. 
 
The host Bearcats scored 60 points in the first half, connecting on 67.7 percent of its field goals and a staggering nine-of-12 attempts from behind the three-point line. Saint Vincent also converted nine-of-10 shots at the free throw line in the first half. 
 
Sophomore forward Okikiola Agbale (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) led the Presidents with eight points in the first half. The Presidents were unable to match the hot shooting Bearcats over the first 20 minutes. W&J connected on 10-of-29 field goal attempts (34.5 percent) and made just two-of-eight three-point attempts in the opening half of play.   
 
The Presidents were able to regroup a little in the second half, as the Red and Black outscored the Bearcats 42-33 over the final 20 minutes. W&J was able to cut the deficit to 72-54 on a layup by junior guard Cameron Seemann(Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) with 8:18 to play. However, that was as close as the Presidents would get as the Bearcats used another lengthy run, sparked by three consecutive triples by Josh Duda to finish off the victory. 
 
Saint Vincent set the tone offensively with 14 made three-pointers on just 23 attempts (60.9 percent). The Bearcats also converted 32-of-59 from the field (54.2 percent).  
 
Seemann paced the Presidents with a team-high 14 points. Agbale added another strong effort from the floor, as he tallied 12 points on five-of-six shooting. Sophomore forward Alexander Skowron (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) tallied nine points and five boards off the bench.
 
Duda led Saint Vincent with 19 points off the bench, which included 6-of-7 makes on three-point attempts. The Bearcats recorded 45 bench points in the victory. 
 
The loss dropped W&J to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in league play. Saint Vincent improves to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in PAC action. 
 
The Presidents host Geneva College in the conference home opener on Saturday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
