ONEONTA, NY – 'Wick dominated visiting CCNY in the opening game of the Hartwick Basketball Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night at Lambros Arena, defeating the Beavers 91-65. The Hawks are now 2-1 on the season and will play Farmingdale, a 95-84 winner over Plattsburgh in the other of tonight's matchups, in Saturday's championship game at 4 p.m.
The Hawks shot 47% (33-for-70) from the floor as a team and knocked down 11 three-pointers on the night. They controlled the glass, 49-33. The total included 19 offensive rebounds which they turned into 25 second-chance points. Hartwick also forced the Beavers into 21 turnovers, which it converted into 29 points.
Eleven Hawks made it into the scoring column, led by Pat Garey's (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) 16 points. He connected on three first-half three pointers to lead his squad at the break with 12 points. He also contributed three assists, three steals, and three boards. Kyle Bradshaw (Tinton Falls, NJ/Manasquan) added 13 points with six rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
Tommy Kelly (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) netted 11 points with Nick Eiler (Highland Mills, NY/Saddle River Day) coming off the bench for 10 points.
Hartwick raced out to a 15-4 lead after just 5:45 of action and they never looked back. Garey would net nine of those points for the Hawks, who increased their margin to a high of 22 points in the half, 32-10, with 7:54 remaining. Fifteen points would as close as the Beavers would get in the period and they had to settle on a 45-25 deficit at halftime.
In the second half, the Hartwick lead hovered around 20 points for the opening 10 minutes. A three from Sam Hanley (Cranston, RI/Cranston East) made it 72-52 at the 9:18 mark and the Hawks never led by less than twenty points the rest of the way. A pair of Jaquan Dickerson (Nyack, NY/Nyack) free throws made the advantage 28 points, the Hawks' biggest of the night, before they ended with the 26-point win.
Austin Haskell (Kirkwood, NY/Susquehanna Valley) led all players with 10 rebounds. He added five points and four steals. Bobby Connors (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) contributed eight points, five boards, four assists, two blocks, and two steals. Calvin Seward (Bridgeport, CT/Fairchild Wheeler) scored six and he grabbed five rebounds. Liam Drennan (Oyster Bay, NY/Chaminade) tallied eight points with three rebounds. Cormac Reilly (New York, NY/Trinity Pawling) chipped in five points.
CCNY received 24 points from Yassine Sakhi. Isaiah Denard registered 15 points for the Beavers.
In the night's second match, Hunter Schenkel poured in a game-high 28 points with eight rebounds and five assists as Farmingdale beat Plattsburgh 95-84. Troy Feeney netted 15 points for the Rams with Corey Powell adding 13. The Cardinals were led by Travis Cox's 25 points.
Plattsburgh plays CCNY in the consolation game at Lambros tomorrow at 2 p.m. Farmingdale and Hartwick play for the tournament crown at 4 p.m.
