GENESEO, NY – The University of Rochester picked up a solid road win to open the 2019-20 season, defeating SUNY Geneseo 72-61 on Tuesday evening at Carl Schrader Gymnasium.

Rochester (1-0) was paced by four players in double-figures including sophomore Ross Gang who had 16 points on 7-10 shooting from the floor.  He added eight rebounds.  The others with 10-plus points were Kailan Lee who had 12, Trent Noordsij (11) and Brian Amabilino Perez (10).

The host Knights (0-1) saw Terrance Nichols finish as their leading scorer with 16 points, while Michael Gannon scored 14.

The Yellowjackets used a 13-0 spurt midway through the first half to bust open the game, jumping out to a 21-7 lead ten minutes in.  A T.C. Price jumper started the run, while Gang, Lee and Ryan Algier each scored three points during the flurry.

Geneseo trimmed the lead to seven with 3:47 to go in the half following a Harrison Dignan layup, but at the break Rochester had built the lead back up to a dozen, leading 36-24.

The Knights were plagued by cold shooting in the opening 20 minutes, being held to just 7-29 from the floor, leading to a big rebounding advantage for the Yellowjackets.  UR ended up winning the battle on the glass 35-29.

Rochester held the Knights at bay in the second half, eventually building a game-high 18 point lead after an Amabilino Perez lay in with 10:20 left in the game.  The closest the Knights would get would be nine down after Elijah Wingfield hit two free throws with just under four minutes to play.

For the game, UR shot 53% from the floor (25-47) and made six triples, but still looked a bit rusty from game action, committing 15 turnovers.  Geneseo meanwhile, ended the night at 33% (18-54) shooting, sinking seven shots from behind the arc.

Rochester's next contest is its home opener during the annual UR Chuck Resler Invitational on Friday night at the Palestra against Misericordia University.
