ELMIRA, NY – Six different Hawks reached double figures and the Hawks dug deep after squandering a 21-point lead to pull out a 106-99 victory over Elmira on Tuesday night at Speidel Gymnasium. 'Wick has now won two in a row and improves to 9-13 overall and 5-8 in E8 play.
The Hawks complete a sweep of the Soaring Eagles after a 108-98 win back on January 18 at Lambros Arena. They have now won eight straight against EC.
Hartwick shot 53% from the field and out-rebounded the Soaring Eagles by a margin of 30-19 in the first half of play. Austin Haskell (Kirkwood, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and Justin Carruthers (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) were perfect from the floor as they combined to shoot 9-for-9 in the opening 20 minutes. Haskell paced the Hawks with 10 points. Carruthers and Pat Garey (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) each added nine points with Calvin Seward (Bridgeport, CT/Fairchild Wheeler) contributed seven.
The Hawks used a 19-3 run to grab a 25-8 lead in the half. They led by 21 points, 37-16, following a Haskell bucket with 6:44 left. A 9-3 spurt to end the half for the hosts cut the lead to 14 at the intermission, 50-36.
The Soaring Eagles chopped away at the Hawks' lead thanks in part to four three-point baskets early in the second half. They went in front, 64-63, at the 12 and a half minute mark. Elmira out-scored Hartwick 15-6 to take its biggest lead of the game, 79-74, with nine minutes remaining. The Hawks stormed back with 16 of the next 18 points in just a 2:21 span to open up a nine-point margin, 90-81.
Kyle Bradshaw (Tinton Falls, NJ/Brookdale CC) and Bobby Connors (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) combined for 14 points in the run. Bradshaw hit two threes with Connors converting an old-fashioned three-point play to give his team the lead for good and he added a trey to extend it on the Hawks' next possession.
Elmira made it a three-point game at the 2:03 mark but Connors buried his third triple of the game to make the lead six. Five points would be as close as the Soaring Eagles would get as 'Wick closed it out with five makes from the free-throw line in the last 1:06.
The Hawks made 55% from the floor on the night with nine three-pointers. The Soaring Eagles took 90 shots in the game, including 49 from three-point range. They would make 44% from the field and 29% from downtown.
Haskell and Carruthers both made all their field-goal attempts in the contest. Haskell led the way with a team-high 21 points on 8-of-8 shooting. Carruthers was 5-for-5 from the floor to finish with 12. Connors, who made five of his seven shots in the second half, ended up with 17 points. He tied for a game-high with eight rebounds and he notched four assists.
Bradshaw tied for a game-high with four treys. He closed out the night with 16 points and five boards. Tommy Kelly (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) matched Carruthers with 12 points.
