Men’s Basketball tames Tomcats in exciting 80-76 overtime win

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore Zach Queen's(Jeannette, Pa./Hempfield Area) game-tying three-pointer near the end of regulation led the Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team to a thrilling 80-76 overtime victory over Thiel on Saturday, Jan. 2, at the Henry Memorial Center. 

With the win today, the Presidents improve to 7-6 in conference action. W&J is now in a three-way tie for third in the league standings, tied with Chatham and Westminster. 

Today's win was highlighted by the late-game heroics of Queen, whose three-pointer with four seconds left in regulation forced OT with the score tied at 68-all. Queen's trey was his 69th of the season, surpassing Brandon Studer (2003-04) for the W&J single-season program record. 

In the extra frame, the Red & Black outscored their league foes by a 12-8 margin with a balanced offensive attack. Four Presidents each scored three points in the stanza. It was Okikiola Agbale's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and-one layup with 28 seconds left that swung the game to the Presidents, as it broke a 76-76 tie. 

Primo Zini (Morgantown, W. Va./Trinity Christian) sealed the W&J win with a free throw with six seconds on the clock that extended the lead to four, 80-76. A missed desperation trey by the Tomcats ended the contest. 

The start of today's game favored Thiel, as the Tomcats stormed out to a 21-9 advantage after the first 12 minutes. The Presidents answered by outscoring Thiel by a 24-6 margin to end the frame, taking a 33-27 lead into the halftime break. Cameron Seemann (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) paced all players in the half with nine points and four rebounds.  

The Tomcats owned the second half, outscoring W&J 41-35. Thiel shot 15-for-33 (45.5 percent) in the half, compared to the Presidents' mark of 12-for-32 (37.5 percent). The Tomcats even had a chance to win in regulation, but a last second three-point make was ruled to be taken after time had expired. 

The two teams today were evenly match, as both shot exactly 27-for-69 (39.1 percent) from the floor. The main difference came down to foul shooting, as the Presidents made 18-for-21 (85.7 percent) from the charity stripe, compared to Thiel going 13-for-21 (61.9 percent). 

Leading the W&J offense today was Seemann, who scored a team-high 21 points to go with eight rebounds. Seemann has scored 20-plus points in five straight games and he paces the team with a 16.5 points-per-game average. 

Nicholas Campalong (Sewickley, Pa./Ambridge) had a career day, pouring in a career-high 17 points in 27 minutes. The sophomore went 6-for-12 from the floor and hauled in seven rebounds with one steal and one block. 

Agbale tallied a season-high with 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting. The freshman also came just two rebounds shy of recording his first career double-double with eight boards.

Rounding out the Red & Black's double-digit scorers was Zini with 12 points. Queen finished the game with nine points, all coming from behind the arc, while Ashton Jones (Kensington, Md./Sidwell Friends (D.C.)) was W&J's final scorer with seven points to go along with four rebounds and four assists. 

The Presidents continue PAC play with a road 7:30 p.m. matchup against Waynesburg on Wednesday, Feb. 6.
