Barry McCormick Cans Two Free Throws With Two Seconds Remaining For Winning Points

BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore guard Barry McCormick made two free throws with two seconds left for the winning points as visiting Washington College stunned first place and host Johns Hopkins, 82-80, on Saturday afternoon in a Centennial Conference men's basketball game at Goldfarb Gym.  The Shoremen improve to 9-10 overall and 5-7 in the Centennial, while the Blue Jays drop to 13-6 and 10-2 respectively.

How It Happened
- In the first half, neither side led by more than five points until Johns Hopkins took an eight-point lead at 42-34 with 4:35 left on a three-pointer by Alex Schachne.
-  Washington would close out the half on an 11-3 run to get it even at 45-45 at the break.  Cole Storm began the run 18 seconds after Schachne's three with a triple of his own to cut it to 42-37 and the Shoremen would tie it with 1:28 left in the half at 45-45 on a Dallas Marshall make from behind the arc.
- Both teams shot over 50% in the opening half as Washington shot 53.3%, while the Blue Jays made 51.9% of their shots.
- The Shoremen scored 17 of the second half's first 26 points to take a 62-54 lead with 10:26 left on a free throw by Benjamin Young.  The Young free throw capped a 28-12 run by the guests.
- Hopkins would answer with a 20-12 run of its own to tie the game at 74-74 with 3:54 remaining on a Joey Kern layup after he stole the ball.
- With the score tied at 78-78, Hopkins' Daniel Vila was fouled with 54 seconds left and made one from the foul line to give the hosts a 79-78 lead.  It was the Blue Jays' first lead since early in the second half.
- Alec Lewis would give Washington the lead back with 37 ticks left on a jumper at 80-79.
- Vila was fouled again with 18 seconds remaining and would make one from the line to knot the game at 80-80.
- On Washington's next possession, Barry McCormick got into the lane and drew a foul.  He would make both from the line to give the visitors an 82-80 lead with two seconds to go.
- Hopkins inbounds pass hit the rafters and they turned it over giving the Shoremen the ball back.  Lewis was fouled, but missed the front end of the one and one and the Blue Jays got the board and called a timeout with eight-tenths of a second left.  Their desperation shot fell way short and the Shoremen got the win.

For The Shoremen (9-10, 5-7 CC)
- Lewis (14 points), Tray Wright (11 points), Daniel Brown (nine points, game-best nine rebounds and two-high steals)
- The Shoremen shot 51% (30-for-59) from the floor, 50% (8-for-16) from three-point range and 70% (14-for-20) from the foul line. 
- Washington had 13 turnovers in the contest.
- The Shoremen held a commanding 37-21 edge on the boards and parlayed that into a 19-3 advantage in second chance points. 
- WC outscored Johns Hopkins in bench points (35-29) and points in the paint (38-20).

For Johns Hopkins (13-6, 10-2 CC)
- Braeden Johnson (game-best 20 points), Michael Gardner (19 points), Vila (10 points and game-best four assists), Joey Fitzpatrick (team-best six rebounds and game-topping three blocks), Noah Ralby (three steals to lead all players)
- The Blue Jays shot 52% (26-for-50) from the floor, 48% (13-for-27) from three-point range and 65% (15-for-23) from the free throw stripe. 
- Johns Hopkins outscored Washington in points off of turnovers (15-3) and and transition points (2-0).
- The Blue Jays had 11 turnovers in the game.

Notes
- It was the Shoremen's first win over the Blue Jays since an 87-80 win on January 27, 2016 at Goldfarb Gym.
- The +16 margin on the boards for Washington is the second highest for the team this season as they had a +21 margin in a win over Keystone in November.
