Gilmour '20 scores 24 in No. 6 Hamilton men's home loss

Colby College drained 13 shots from beyond the arc and the Mules posted an 86-78 NESCAC win against the nationally ranked No. 6 Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon.

Colby (15-5, 3-3 NESCAC) scored 39 points from downtown while the Continentals tallied just 12 from 3-point range. Hamilton was able to stay in the game by going 30-for-38 (78.9 percent) from the free-throw line.

The Continentals (16-2, 3-2) suffered their first loss in eight games at home this season. Kena Gilmour '20 paced Hamilton with 24 points and nine rebounds. Andrew Groll '19 chipped in 12 points and two steals, Michael Grassey '19 added 11 points, Tim Doyle '19 had 10 and Peter Hoffmann '19 scored eight before he fouled out with 10:19 left in the second half.

Sam Jefferson nailed 6 of 10 shots from 3-point range and finished with a game-high 29 points for the Mules. Noah Tyson made four 3-pointers and ended up with 19 points and nine boards. Wallace Tucker scored all 12 of his points in the second half, handed out six assists and grabbed four offensive rebounds.

The Continentals jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the opening three minutes but Colby erased it with an 8-0 run over the next 2:09. Hamilton took its last lead at 15-12 on a free throw by Sayo Denloye '20 and a short jumper by Hoffmann.

The Mules took the lead with another 8-0 spurt. Back-to-back 3-pointer by Jefferson and Devin Davis made it 18-15 with 11:54 remaining and Colby didn't trail again. The Mules' held a 34-27 advantage with 4:05 left when the Continentals scored seven points in a row and forged the last tie. Gilmour went 1-for-2 at the line, Groll sank a pair of shots at the charity stripe, Hoffmann grabbed an offensive board and made the putback, and his two free throws with 1:38 to go tied it at 34-34.

Noah Tyson put Colby in the lead for good on two free throws that made it 36-34 with 2.7 seconds left in the first half. The Mules opened the second half with a 10-2 run for a 46-36 cushion. Hamilton countered with seven straight points to pull within three at 46-43 with 15:32 remaining, but didn't get closer than that the rest of the day. Colby took its largest lead of 12 points at 85-73 with 51 seconds to go.

The Continentals play their final non-conference game this season at 3-13 Wells College on Monday, Jan. 28 at 7:15 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled for Jan. 20 but was postponed due to Winter Storm Harper.
