GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson men's basketball outscored Grove City by a 20-8 margin over the final 6:26 of tonight's PAC bout to post a 63-61 comeback victory in road action on Wednesday, Jan. 16.
With the win, W&J improves to 6-2 in PAC play and 8-9 overall. The Presidents, who picked up their first victory over Grove City since the 2013-14 season, are second in the league standings and own a two-game advantage over their next closest conference foe. The Wolverines drop to 4-4 in the PAC and 9-7 overall.
Trailing 53-43 with 6:26 left in tonight's contest, the Presidents needed a spark to get them back in the game. Zach Queen (Jeannette, Pa./Hempfield Area) began the comeback with one of his five second-half three-pointers to cut the deficit to seven. Two more Queen treys over the next two minutes drew W&J to within two, 55-53, with 4:17 on the clock.
Both teams then began to trade points until Queen sank another long ball with 1:33 left to give the Red & Black a 60-59 advantage, its second of the game. A Grove City jumper gave the lead back to the home team until Queen hit the most important shot of the night, a corner three-pointer with 16 seconds left to put the W&J back up 63-61.
Tonight's exciting second half was set up by the Presidents fighting to keep the halftime deficit to just five, 26-21, after trailing by as much as 11. Cameron Seemann (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) fueled the offense in the stanza, accounting for 12 of W&J's 21 points. He scored the Red & Black's final six points of the half.
It was a tale of two halves for the Presidents behind the arc. In the first, W&J shot 3-for-12 (25.0 percent) from deep. Despite these struggles, the Red & Black kept shooting and went 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) on treys in the second half. This second-half shooting performance was just enough to pull the Presidents ahead in the close affair.
Queen scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half. The sophomore tied a career high with 18 points tonight, a mark he just set on Saturday, Jan. 12, against Bethany. He also logged two rebounds, one assist and one steal in 27 minutes.
Seemann finished the game with 16 points and game highs with eight rebounds and five assists. His five assists are a new career high.
Jonathan DeVito (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) and Nicholas Campalong (Sewickley, Pa./Ambridge) also had solid games with nine and eight points, respectively. DeVito added two assists, one rebound and a block to his stat line, while Campalong had two boards and two assists.
The second place Presidents opens the second half of conference play at first place Saint Vincent on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m.
