Ellis leads #10 Marietta to overtime win at Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio — Freshman Lukas Isaly scored eight points in overtime as the No. 10 ranked Marietta College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Northern, 87-80, Saturday (Jan. 12) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Polar Bears fall to 4-11 on the season and 0-8 in the OAC.

"I'm proud of our team for pulling out a tough hard-fought road game," Marietta head coach Jon VanderWal said. "We didn't play our best but we handled a slow start and some adversity really well."

Ohio Northern's Daniel Unruh drained a three-pointer with no time on the clock at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. Unruh actually scored the final seven points of the second half erasing Marietta's 75-68 lead over the final two minutes.

Marietta scored the first four points in overtime and never trailed. Isaly and Anthony Wallace each sank jumpers putting the Pioneers in front, 79-75, one minute into the extra period.

Following a three-pointer from Ryan Bruns that got the Polar Bears within one, 81-80, Isaly answered with a bucket and then iced the game with four straight free throws.

Bruns, the defending OAC Player of the Year, finished with a game high 31 points and 15 rebounds. Marietta's Jason Ellis came off the bench and drained five three-pointers scoring 25 points to lead the Pioneers.

"Jason  Ellis came up huge today. He gave us a big spark offensively that we desperately needed," VanderWal said. "Jason played fearless and really put us on his back for stretches."

Caleb Hoyng notched a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Isaly chipped in with 13 points, while Kyle Dixon and Mason Lydic each added nine points.

In addition to Bruns, the Polar Bears were led by Colton Bachman who hit four from three-point range and finished with 18 points. Unruh added 14 points, while Daniel Donner grabbed eight boards.

For the game, Marietta was 32-of-72 (44.4%) from the floor, 8-of-26 (30.8%) from three-point range and 15-of-18 (83.3%) at the free throw line. The Polars shot 46.3% (31-of-67) from the floor, 32.1% (9-of-28) behind the arc and 64.3% (9-of-14) at the line.

Ohio Northern turned the ball over 18 times resulting in 25 MC points, while the Pioneers committed 11 turnovers which ONU turned into nine points. Marietta edged the Polar Bears on the glass, 43-38.

Marietta closes out the first round of OAC games on Wednesday (Jan. 16) when the University of Mount Union visits Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers and Purple Raiders are tied for second place in the conference standings with 7-1 records.
