Sewanee Men’s Basketball Drops Overtime Decision at Berry

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Sewanee men's basketball team rallied to force overtime, but the Vikings of Berry were too much in the extra period, as the Tigers' six-game winning streak ends with a defeat on the road in a Southern Athletic Association matchup, 69-64, Friday night inside the Cage Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Vikings dominated the opening half, limiting one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the conference to a 2-of-13 mark from downtown, as Berry led 28-21 at the half.

-Sewanee found their stroke in the second half to push the contest to overtime, shooting 13-of-24 from the field.

-Trailing 43-39 with 9:51 left in regulation, the Tigers went on a 5-0 run to earn their first lead of the game, 44-43.

-The teams played back-and-forth, with no team having more than a four-point lead.

-With the game even at 57 points apiece, the Vikings made it a two-point contest after two free throws by Myles Moore with 22 seconds remaining.

-On the next and final possession of regulation for Sewanee, Luke Smith forced the extra period with a layup with four seconds left to even the score at 59-59.

-The Vikings thought they had won the game on a buzzer beater on the final play of the second half, but the shot came after the horn sounded.

-Berry made the first points in overtime, but Smith brought the deficit to one point with a triple. After two missed opportunities to re-take the lead, Smith gave Sewanee the 64-63 lead with a layup with 2:19 left.

-However, the lead would be short-lived, as Berry regained the lead for good on the next possession.

-The Vikings held Sewanee's offense to 2-of-10 from the field and 1-of-6 from beyond the arc in the extra period.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Luke Smith, for the fourth time this season, matched his career high with 27 points, 24 coming in the second half and overtime. He also added six assists and three steals as he played in 42 minutes.

-Jordan Warlick added 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

BERRY KEY STATISTICS
-Elijah Hirsh posted 24 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks to lead the Vikings.

-Quinn Atkinson also collected 13 points off the bench.

-Berry, who finished the night 18-of-31 from the free throw line, drained 6-of-8 in overtime.

Sewanee will next travel to Oglethorpe Sunday afternoon as the first of back-to-back weekend road trips will conclude in Atlanta.
