Chicago, Ill., Jan. 5, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team suffered an 88-80 loss at the University of the Chicago in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both teams Saturday in the Windy City.

Chicago improved to 8-4 and 1-0 in the UAA, while WashU dropped to 7-5 and 0-1 in the conference. The Maroons hit 12 three-pointers in the win, and outscored the Bears 36-9 from beyond the arc.

Junior forward Hank Hunter had a career-high 21 points in his first-career start, while sophomore guard Jack Nolan added 15. Junior forward DeVaughn Rucker (13) and freshman forward Justin Hardy (11) also scored in double figures for the Bears.

WashU shot 53.4 percent (31-58) from the field and hit 15-of-18 from the foul line. 

Justin Jackson had the hot hand for Chicago scoring 11 of the first 19 points as the Maroons led early on 19-15. WashU cut the lead to one (19-18) on a free-throw by freshman guard Charlie Jacob.

Back-to-back threes by Chicago extended the lead to 29-22, and then a three-point play by Noah Karros with 7:16 to play made it 32-22. The Maroons' lead grew to 45-30 with 3:18 left before half and forced a third timeout by WashU.

Hunter led Bears with 10 points as WashU trailed 46-34 at half. WashU shot 51.9 percent (14-27) from the field, but was 0-for-4 from three-point range. Chicago hit seven threes and outrebounded WashU 18-12 in the opening half.

WashU turned up the defense in the second half, and a pair of free-throws by Rucker trimmed the lead to 61-54 with 12:20 left. Rucker had six points in a 55-second span for the Bears. Nolan drained an open three with less than 11 minutes left to cut the lead to 63-59.

A bucket by Hunter trimmed the advantage to 70-65 with 8:02 to play, but that would be as close as the Bears would get.

Dominic Larvie had a game-high 24 points, while Noah Karras added 12. Jordan Baum dished out a game-high 11 assists for Chicago. The Maroons outrebounded the Bears 39-31, and had a 25-14 advantage in points off turnovers. 

WashU returns home to host Emory University (9-3, 0-1 UAA) on Friday, Jan. 11, at 8 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Chicago, 51-23, and the Maroons have won the last two meetings … Nolan scored in double figures for the 13th time this season … The Bears were outrebounded for the third time this season … The 88 points allowed were the second most this season.
