WashU Drops 77-63 Decision at No. 3 Augustana

Rock Island, Ill, Dec. 29, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team returned from a 17-day layoff and suffered a 77-63 loss at No. 3 Augustana College (Ill.) Saturday in Rock Island, Ill. 

Augustana won its ninth-straight game to improve to 11-1, while WashU had its two-game win streak snapped and fell to 6-4.

Junior guard Matt Nester and sophomore guard Jack Nolan led WashU with 15 points each, while junior forward Hank Hunter added 13 points and eight rebounds.

WashU shot a season-low 38.5 percent (21-54) from the field, and hit just 2-of-14 from three-point range. The Bears hit 19-of-24 (79.2 percent) from the foul line and was outrebounded 46-32.

The Bears started slow and trailed 6-2 in the opening four minutes of the contest. Nester's three with 9:21 to play before half gave WashU its largest lead of the game at 18-15. Nester hit his first four shots from the field and had nine first-half points.

WashU went cold from the field and did not have a bucket for 4:26 and Augustana responded with an 11-0 run to take the 26-18 lead. Augustana led 40-29 at half as WashU shot 47.8 percent (11-23) from the field.

The Bears got the lead down to nine (40-31) with 18:24 on a jumper by Nester, but that would be as close as WashU would get the rest of the way. Augustana. WashU shot just 32.3 percent (10-31) from the field in the second half and was 0-for-10 from three-point range.

Nolan Ebel led all scorers with 27 points, while Chrishawn Orange added 18, Pierson Wofford had 11 and Micah Martin chipped in with 10 off the bench. Augustana was limited to 38.7 percent (24-62) shooting. 

WashU plays is final non-conference game of the season on Monday, Dec. 31, at Westminster College (Mo.). Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
