Shooting Struggles Doom William Paterson in Loss to Rowan

WAYNE, N.J. – Malcolm McLeod (Teaneck, N.J./Eastern Christian) and Hershell Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Timber Creek) combine for 29 second-half points, but the William Paterson men's basketball team (7-4, 4-2 NJAC) could not overcome its worst shooting performance of the season as the Pioneers feel to Rowan (6-3, 3-3 NJAC), 76-66, Dec. 12.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • WP connected on just 12-of-38 attempts from the field (.316) in the opening half as Rowan led by as many as 13 (19-6, 14:07) before taking a 35-29 lead into the locker room.
  • Looking for a spark in the second stanza, the Pioneers looked to their bench to help erase the Profs' advantage. Hershell Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Timber Creek) scored eight points in just under two minutes as WP trimmed the deficit to seven (50-43). Consecutive buckets by McLeod, Jared Bennett(Winslow Twp., N.J./Winslow Twp.) and Justin Lingat (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) electrified the crowd as Rowan was forced to take a timeout. When play resumed, McLeod's deep three-pointer got the home team to within three (53-50), but Rowan scored 10 of the next 13 points and never looked back, taking the game 76-66.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Malcolm McLeod's (Teaneck, N.J./Eastern Christian) 19 points led all scorers, while Hershell Williams(Philadelphia, Pa./Timber Creek) added a career-best 10.
  • Lingat grabbed a team-high nine rebounds while adding six points and three assists.
  • WP's shot a season-low 34.2% (25-73) from the field, including just 5-of-18 from deep.
  • William Paterson held a substantial margin in bench points, outscoring its counterparts from Rowan 47-9.
