ONEONTA, NY – Back to full strength for the first time this season, all ten Hawks made it into the scoring column as Hartwick evened its record at 3-3 and took down previously unbeaten Oneonta (3-1) 83-72 Tuesday night at Dewar Arena. Pat Garey (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) scored 18 points for Hartwick. Tommy Kelly (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Kyle Bradshaw (Tinton Hills, NY/Brookdale CC), who were both in action for their first games of the season, combined for 29 points.
The Hawks would shoot 45.2% (28-for-62) from the floor as a group and 50% from three-point range, knocking down 13 of their 26 attempts.
After shaking off an early 9-0 hole, the Hawks would make five of their first seven three-point attempts to surge ahead. Bradshaw connected on a three-pointer, the first of two straight, to put the Hawks ahead 13-12. His second put Hartwick up to stay at 16-14 with another triple from Bobby Connors (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) extending the advantage to five with 11:49 remaining in the half.
A 9-2 run, capped by a Justin Carruthers (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) layup would hand the Hawks their biggest lead of the half, 30-19, with 7:16 left. The Red Dragons trimmed the margin to five at one point, but back-to-back three-pointers from Garey and Sam Hanley (Cranston, RI/Cranston East) made it an 11-point game once again with under five minutes left on the clock. Two layups from Kelly with under a minute left gave the Hawks a 10-point lead at halftime, 43-33.
Bradshaw finished with 11 first-half points to pace the Hawks. Kelly contributed 10.
In the second half, The Red Dragons would trim the Hartwick lead to five in the opening four minutes only to have the Hawks net five straight to build it back to 11. A 12-4 Hawks' run over a six-minute window gave 'Wick its biggest lead of the night, 66-50, on a Garey layup with 8:44 left to play.
The Red Dragons answered with a 15-4 spurt which cut the deficit to just five, 70-65, with 4:09 showing on the clock. Hartwick would then out-score Oneonta 9-3 over the next two minutes with Garey and LaForest netting threes and Kelly and Kevin Townes (Lagrangeville, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) converting free throws for a 79-68 lead with 1:47 to play. Nine points would be as close as the Red Dragons would get the rest of the way as the Hawks closed out the victory.
The win improves Hartwick's all-time record against Oneonta to 26-16. Tonight's result marks the fifth straight time the road team has claimed victory.
